Robert Russell "Chubby" Wise
(2 Oct 1915 - 6 Jan 1996)
Chubby Wise was a member of what is considered the definitive Bluegrass band: Bill Monroe, Chubby Wise, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, and Cedric Rainwater. He was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association's Hall of Honor in 1998. Among other things, Chubby co-wrote the "Orange Blossom Special", which is a favorite of fiddlers and listeners everywhere.
You know, when you are young, you never can fully appreciate the experiences you go through. I had the privilege of meeting and jamming with one of the greatest fiddle players ever to pick up a bow. He was also a nice man with a warm smile. It is only now that I realize what an honor that was. I remember Sunday afternoons in Houston going out to dinner and then going back to Chubby's house and breaking out the fiddles. As the old saying goes: If I'd only known then what I know now...
