HOW DID WE GET THE BIBLE?(Biblios-"Book")

CHAPTER 11

MANUSCRIPTS(SECOND TIMOTHY 4:13)

We've already discussed the Septuagint for the Old Testament Books, and now we come to the complete collection of Old and New Testament Books compiled into the book we call the Bible. After the Letters/Epistles, Gospels, and Revelation had been written, the New Testament books started circulating throughout the congregations (Nave's Topical Bible). Copies were then made to make the job easier. Clement of Rome in A.D. 70 quotes 17 of the New Testament books [Bible scholars say that the rest were not written yet](The Bible: The Inspired Book). In A.D. 96 Clement Of Rome ("Who Wrote The Bible?"U.S. News And World Report),and in A.D. 110, Ignatius wrote in their letters massive quotes from most of the New Testament(How We Got Our Bible). Justin Martyr in A.D. 140 quoted whole books of the New Testament in his "Apologies", designed to explain Christianity to the world, describing them as "reliable historical records"("Who Wrote The Bible?" U.S. News And World Report). Irenaeus[A.D.130-200], a pupil of Polycarp, declared the 27 New Testament Books being circulated as the Holy Scriptures from God, while rebuking the Godless philosophers of his time(Why We Believe The Bible). Tertullian[160-220] of Carthage described in detail the Books first as the "New Testament Books of Christ," and declared them as "Holy Scripture". Papias of Heirapolis stated that the writers of the New Testament "wrote accurately" all the "sayings of the Lord"("Who Wrote The Bible?"U.S. News And World Report). The Muratorian remnant, dated A.D.170, contains the list of the New Testament Books(Eerdman's Handbook To The Bible). Until recent discoveries, critics [such as David Strauss] thought the Bible was written sometime after the Third Century(The Divine Demonstration: A Textbook Of Christian Evidence).

The early church recognized the Bible as the Word of God. They knew that the Holy Spirit directed the authors(John 16:13; Second Peter 1:20,21). Scholars say that "they worked on the assumption that God's logic was impeccable; only man's understanding was wanting"("Genesis Reconsidered" Time), which the Bible tells us as fact(Job 38; Psalms 104; Proverbs 3; First Corinthians 1:25). We know the Bible is the Word of God {Jesus, as the literal Word of God(Genesis 1:1; John 1:1-5; Hebrews 1:1,2)}.

Because of false teachers, the early church tested the books sent to their region, whether they were genuine or impostors(The Eternal Kingdom, A History Of The Church Of Christ). The Book of Ephesians was easily accepted in Ephesus, but the Letter to the Romans took some time to reach Ephesus, and so it was later that the church in Ephesus recognized that Paul was the actual writer. The churches had to be careful. They checked the documents to make sure they were real(First John 4:1). There have been more than fifty manuscripts found today, each claiming to be part of the Word of God, including such books as "The Acts of Pilate@, "The Gospel of Thomas", "The Acts of Peter", and "The Passing of Mary"(The Lost Books Of The Bible And The Forgotten Books Of Eden). These were NOT included in the Muratorian remnant or any other accepted early manuscript(Halley's Bible Handbook). The TRUE manuscripts referred to each other, or have similar recordings/parallels of some of Jesus' teaching or events backed by historical evidences(Why We Believe The Bible).

Around the middle of the Second Century, the writings were turned into the Codex form, what we would recognize as book form(Encyclopedia Britannica). They used vellum, a very durable material made from animal skins. The Old Syriac Version was the first known, from about A.D. 150[both Old and New Testaments]. The Old Latin Version soon was made, translating from the Greek language. Origen[185-254], a Scholar, had 20 copyists working under him making copies of the Latin Version for the churches(How We Got Our Bible). Each copier had an observer, checking for accuracy. He declared the 27 Books of the New Testament as Inspired(Second Timothy 3:16-17). The historian Eusebius[264-340] describes Diocletian[284-305] as not only having persecuted christians, but also tried to destroy all the copies of the Bible[over 60,000] as well(Halley's Bible Handbook). Later, when Constantine[306-337] became Emperor, Eusebius was employed to make 50 copies of the Bible for him.

Today, there are more than 20,000 manuscripts and documents of the Bible[Old Testament and New Testament] that have been found(How We Got The Bible),many dating to the Second century[A.D. 100's] or even earlier("Who Wrote The Bible?"U.S. News And World Report). Historians note that the early manuscripts were carefully copied(Isaac Asimov's Commentary On The Bible). Origen stated how carefully the copying process was done. The scribe or copier would not trust his memory but would count the words and letters in every copy, and compared them to the original(Eerdman's Handbook To The Bible). If one incorrect letter was found, the whole page was destroyed. They pronounced aloud each and every word before writing it(How We Got Our Bible). The Jewish scholars even wiped their pens before writing "God", and washed their bodies before even writing the word "Jehovah"(The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia).

There were two basic styles of copying: Unctial and cursive(Encyclopedia Britannica). The earliest documents were Unctial, in which the letters were all capitalized, without spaces between the words, and used no punctuation(Anchor Bible Dictionary). In addition, an unfinished word was completed on the line below in order to keep the columns straight. For example:

FORGODSOLOVEDTHEWORLDTHATHEG

AVEHISONLYBEGOTTENSONTHATWHO

SOEVERBELIEVESINHIMSHOULDNOT

PERISHBUTHAVEEVERLASTINGLIFE

would show what John 3:16 might look like. The cursive style was written later, and made the Bible into works of art with fancy letters and paintings. Some of these Bibles have been sold for thousands of dollars. The Guinness book of World Records mentions a Bible sold for more than FIVE million dollars!

Due to the difficulties of reading and copying the manuscripts, documents, and Bibles of the time, around 1228 the ArchBishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langston had the Latin Vulgate Bible divided into sections called chapters(How We Got Our Bible). From then on, all copies made of the Bible were divided into chapters. In 1448, Rabbi Nathan is credited for putting in numbers that were called verses into the Old Testament. In 1551, Robert Stephanus, a printer from Paris, numbered the New Testament into verses(Encyclopedia Brittanica). Verses were added to make things even easier to read and copy. As English, and other languages progressed, the Geneva Bible[1560] added italics to help understand the context of the scriptures, due to some words not having any equivalents in the Hebrew or Greek(Nave's Topical Bible). For example, the French have no word for the British invention called Television, so they repronounce it with the French accent. One example of italics is Mark 10:18. In the King James Version, without italics, it would read "why call me good? None good but one, God." Romans 8:31b would make less sense: "If God for us, who against us?".

Some people confuse the difference between a manuscript and a version. A manuscript is a copy from one language into the same language(Halley's Bible Handbook). A version, or translation, is a copy from one language into a different language. The Bible has been translated into almost every known language(How We Got Our Bible). There is even an attempt by Trekkies to translate the Bible into Klingon, an invented language! The Bible has also been translated into Pig Latin and placed on the Internet computer "Superhighway" (Computer Life, Nov.1995). Compared to the Bible, copies made from other ancient writings don't even come close. Homer's Iliad has been translated into only 20 languages, and Shakespeare's writings into 33 languages(Why We Believe The Bible). Only a fraction of these writers' works is said to exist today, compared to thousands of copies for the Bible. In comparing ancient manuscripts, Caesar's Gallic Wars[B.C.58-50], the oldest existing copy is 9th century, The Roman History of Livy[B.C.59-17 A.D.], copies of 35 of his 147 books are dated as the 4th century. The History of Thucydides[B.C.460-400] and The History of Herodotus[480-425 B.C.] has only eight copies, the oldest being around 900 A.D., but "no classical scholar would listen to an argument that the authenticity" of the writers "is in doubt because the earliest manuscripts of their works which are of any use to us 1,300 years later than the originals", so it is argued "if the New Testament were a collection of secular writings, their authenticity would generally be regarded as beyond all doubt."(The New Testament Documents)

The Oldest, most complete Bibles are the Sinaiticus[3rd century], the Vatican[4th century], and the Alexandrian[5th](New World Encyclopedia), while one of the oldest fragments of the New Testament found has been dated to A.D. 100, which contains the verse John 18:38(Who Wrote The Bible?), while fragments of the other Gospels were found in January of 1995, and have been dated to A.D. 63-80, which counters the skeptic's claim that the Bible was written centuries later by church fathers in order to support their doctrines("Are The Bible Stories True?@Time). The dates for these manuscripts; Matthew[A.D.68-80], Mark[A.D.68], and Luke[63-67](The Search For Jesus), prove the Gospels as "Authentic biographies based on eyewitness accounts"("Are The Bible's Stories True?Time). Copies of Paul's Letters can be dated to about A.D. 200("Who Wrote The Bible?"U.S. News And World Report). The Coptic version of the Bible is older[2nd century] than the other three versions. The Ethiopic[4th] and the Gothic[A.D. 375] were made about the same time as the "Big Three", but have several missing parts(Eerdman's Handbook To The Bible). A copy of the Old Syriac version dated about the 3rd century, and of the Vulgate version that scholars believe was possibly copied down by Jerome himself in A.D.385 have been found(How We Got The Bible). He wrote that he used an old Greek Bible that had once belonged to Origen[185-254] in his translation work(How We Got Our Bible). The Peshito Syrian version[4th century], Washington[4th], and the Curetonian Syriac[4th] are also contemporaries of the "Big Three". Later versions include the Ephraem[5th century], the Beza[5th], the Armenian[5th], the Arabic[9th], and the Slavic[9th]. Recently, a Chinese manuscript of the Bible was discovered, and believed to have been written around A.D. 640(The Lion Encyclopedia Of The Bible). Each version's name is based upon the language translated to, the location either where the Book was found, or where the book currently resides[ie. the Washington version is located in Washington D.C.].(Encyclopedia Americana)

The Catholic Church claims to be the one to bring the Bible to the people during the council of Hippo in A.D. 390, but as was noted, the Bible preexists the Catholic [Universal] Church.

In fact, the Lord's church existed before the Catholic Church was founded upon man's principles(Exalted Above The Hills). Around 1945, the church of Christ(Romans 16:16) was found in Ethiopia, still following the Apostles' teaching, and could even be traced back to the Ethiopian Official that Philip had converted(The Eternal Kingdom, A History Of The Church Of Christ). The church sang, prayed, partook of the Lord's supper every Sunday, and read from fragments of the Bible, and listened as the Elders quoted the scriptures, as quoted to them for generations(The Eternal Kingdom, A History Of The Church Of Christ). In Europe, the German Evangelist Hans Goodwin Grimm is a descendant of centuries of New Testament Christianity, calling themselves only "Christians"(Acts 11:26)(The Misunderstood Church), as well as "christians" in colonial America(Have You Been Warned About The Church Of Christ?). The 66 Books of the Bible were recognized by the Council of Hippo as inspired, making these books what is called the "Canon" of the Catholic Church(The Catholic Encyclopedia).

It is important to mention that the Catholic Church soon started persecuting christians who didn't fall in line with Catholic doctrine, such as instrumental worship. Around the 8th century it became accepted(Harvard Concise Dictionary Of Music), and was one of the Reformation Movement's major condemnations by such leaders as Martin Luthor, John Wesley, and Charles Spurgeon, who tried to go back to the Bible, denied instrumental worship as sacred due to its absence in the New Testament. The Catholic Church's Counter-Reformation accepted Instrumental Music because Reformers rejected it(A History Of Western Music). The Catholic Church even burned Bibles and killed the copyists who made Bibles in the language of the common people(Foxe's Book Of Martyrs). The Catholic Church forged documents to support their doctrine, during the 8th century, and declared anything else written as opposing God (The Catholic Encyclopedia). In about A.D. 1000, the Waldenses and the Berenarians, who were loyal to the Bible's doctrine, were massacred by agents of the Catholic Church(Exalted Above The Hills). Peter Bruis and Peter Valdo and their reformers were also killed. In 1147, Pope Innocent III started the Inquisition. Inquisitors[severe Judges] labeled all those not following the Pope as heretics, and were killed. Bibles were burned. Under the Spanish Inquisition in the 1200's more than 300,000 were killed(Foxe's Book Of Martyrs). Priests were known to carry a cross in one hand and a dagger in the other, preaching for all to follow the Catholic Church's doctrine, or die(Encyclopedia Of Religion And Ethics). This policy continued throughout the Reformation movement. The Spanish Inquisition continued into the Americas as well as in Europe, "surviving in one form or another into the 19th century"(The Spanish Inquisition). History repeats itself when priests held the cross in one hand and a whip in the other enslaving native Americans to build missions, cathedrals, etc., similarly to the Jews in Egypt. In Paris on August the 22nd through the 25th in 1572[the Feast of St. Bartholomew], occurred what has been called the Bartholomew massacre, in which more than 10,000 people were killed in the name of Catholicism(Foxe's Book Of Martyrs). On October 18, 1685, the Edict of Nantes declared that all those not following Catholic Doctrine were to be killed. Thousands from a group that the Catholics called the Huguenots were killed, because they wanted to follow the Bible and not the Pope(Exalted Above The Hills).

The Catholic Church condemned any translation outside of Latin. Many copiers died trying to translate into such languages as German, Polish, and English. In 1454, Gutenberg invented the printing press and a German translation of the Bible was the first Book printed(The Book Of Knowledge). This made it possible for Bibles to be made cheaper, faster, and more abundant(Handbook To The History of Christianity). The printing press made it even harder for the Catholic Church to suppress the Bible's teachings(Exalted Above The Hills).

The first Bible written in English was the Caedmon in Anglo-Saxon English[A.D.676]. Wycliff made an English translation in 1382, and was tried for heresy. Tyndale wrote one in 1525[almost 15,000 copies were burned at St. Pauls], and Coverdale in 1535. The Roger's and Matthew's versions were written in 1537. The "Great Bible", called because of its size, was written in 1539(Eerdman's Handbook To The Bible). The Geneva Bible was written in 1560, soon followed by the Bishop's version[1568], then the Rheims-Dovay version in 1610. The King James Version was written by 48 scholars in 1611, using the "Textus Receptus" [a very important greek text compiled by Desiderius Erasmus(A Position Paper On The Versions Of The Bible)], and became the standard for quite some time(How We Got Our Bible). During the Restoration Movement in Europe and the United States during the 17th-19th centuries, the King James Version was extensively used to encourage those who had been involved in Denominationalism to return to the Bible, and to the New Testament church[from "Ekklesia"- meaning the "Called Out"(Dictionary Of The Bible)]. These people, attempting to restore New Testament Christianity, speaking only what the Bible speaks, and remaining silent where the Bible is silent, like the Bible says(First Peter 4:11) They were called by many names, including "Campbellites", but they called themselves only "christians"(The Search For The Ancient Order). Important leaders of the Restoration Movement of the Lord's church at that time included James O'Kelly, Abner Jones, Barton W. Stone, Alexander Campbell, Walter Scott, and "Raccoon" John Smith(Gospel Minutes,Jan.5 1996). The movement toward the New Testament order of things occurred in Europe, America, Australia, and India, with most of them having no contact with another, or knowing if others were involved(That Ye May Grow). Denominational scholars have stated with amazement that, despite not having a convention, a central government, the vast distances between them, or that the printed journals are not centralized, "their conformity in both ideas and teaching is all the more remarkable"(Handbook Of Denominations In The U.S.), not realizing that if ANYONE decides to reject denominational creeds to follow after the Bible ONLY will find themselves in "conformity" matching those with the Lord's Church, found in the New Testament(Come Let Us Reason). They followed the Biblical concept of not going beyond what is written in the Bible(Deuteronomy 4:2; Joshua 1:7; Proverbs 30:6; First Corinthians 4:6; Galatians 1:8; Second John 9; Revelation 22:18,19).

During a renewed interest in Archeology, new manuscripts were uncovered, making it necessary to make new translations("The Bible In The Twenty First Century"The Church Enters The Twenty First Century). The Revised Standard[1881]{First to use the "Big 3", 101 scholars wrote, using their leader's own source- the Westcott & Hort greek text(A Position Paper On The Versions Of The Bible), is what many scholars think is still the most accurate Version written}, the Anglo-American[1885], the American Standard[1901], the 20th century version[1902], the Weymouth version[1903], the Moffatt version[1913], and the Goodspeed version[1923] were the first new translations since the King James Version(How We Got Our Bible). The Catholic Church soon followed with their Catholic Confraternity Version in 1941, followed by the Basic English Version[1941] which used only 1,000 common words(The Lion Encyclopedia Of The Bible).

Soon after the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, many other Versions appeared(How We Got The Bible). First there was the Amplified Version[1958], the Phillips[1958], the Wuest[1958], the Berkeley[1959], and the New English Bible[1961]. Then came the Good News version[1966], the English version for the Deaf[1978], the New American Standard[1971], the New International Version(NIV)[1973], Today's English Version[1976], the New King James Version[1979], The Catholic New American Bible(St. Joseph)[1970], the Modern Language Version[1974], the Living Bible[1972], the New American Bible[1986], the New Revised Standard[1990], and many other Versions. The Catholics have a Catholic Bible, the Mormons have a Mormon Bible, the Jehovah's Witnesses have the WatchTower version(Handbook Of Denominations In The U.S.). In 1977 it was noted by scholars that there were more than 340 English translations of the Bible, as well as Old and New Testaments("The Bible In The Twenty First Century"The Church Enters The Twenty First Century). Many people still like the King James Version or KJV because some of the words sound "holy", like "thee", and "thou", either not knowing or caring that the KJV was written in the common English of that time, and that these were once common words used by everyone(Exalted Above The Hills). The King James Version has more than three million letters and 720,000 words in it. There are more than 200,000 references to God in the KJV Bible(Guinness Book Of World Records).

Some people claim that the Bible is full of errors(Mistakes Of The Bible). The number of claimed errors sometimes is said to be as high as 200,000(How We Got The Bible-Lightfoot). Most so-called errors are verses, sentences, etc. taken out of context because they do not understand the Bible, or have very little Bible background knowledge(Eerdman's Handbook To The Bible). In checking their claims, one reason the number maybe high, is that a translation might leave out ONE word, in which 1,000 copies are then made. They then declare the Bible as having 1,000 errors(Why We Believe The Bible)! A few years ago, a printing company accidentally left out the word "not" in Exodus 20 of their KJV Bible, and 500 copies were made before the error was discovered. Because of so large a number of early manuscripts, we can find in today's Bibles where the human mistakes are, and scholars can then correct these newer translations(Alleged Bible Contradictions Explained). As more ancient manuscripts are found, more new translations are made to correct the mistakes of man. According to scholars, due to the massive amounts of ancient and early manuscripts and documents, only .001% of the Bible displays any differences of meanings for the current Versions(How We Got The Bible-Lightfoot). However, some versions purposefully edit certain scriptures to follow certain denominational doctrines, ie. the "Phillips" translation reedited by the Jehovah's Witness denomination("The Bible In The Twenty First Century"The Church Enters The Twenty First Century). There are so-called translations which really are transliterations which are paraphrased using man-made inferences which justify man-made churches/doctrines, ie. "Good News for Modern Man" and the Living Bible(The Living Bible...Paraphrased and Perversion). They justify this by saying "everyone interprets the Bible differently"(Are All The Different Churches From God?), ignoring what the Bible says about their "interpretation"(Second Peter 3:16). The NIV separates certain verses, changing the meanings, declaring that "the most important manuscripts do not include these verses"(NIV). The WatchTower Version leaves out portions of John, and rewrites "God" as "gods" in certain verses(Watchtower Press). The Mormons include portions of the Book of Mormon in their version of their Bible(Handbook Of Denominations In The U.S.). The Inclusive Version of the Bible puts God in Matthew 6:6 as "Our Father-Mother in heaven". One of the leaders of the Feminist Movement declared that the "scripture is the Church's book. I think the Church can do with its scripture what it wants to do with its scripture"(The Feminist Gospel: The Movement To Unite Feminism And The Church). They remove anti-Gay/Lesbian scripture from the Bible, despite those who left the "lifestyle" argue that "individuals and organizations that promote homosexuality as just another healthy alternative to normal sexuality are promoting a lie"(Christianity Today, Nov. 13, 1995). These ideas come from the "New Hermeneutics"[Hermeneutics-Science of interpretation(Dictionary Of The Bible And Religion)], in which such followers as Rubel Shelly state that God can't express Himself to man because He uses "God-talk" instead of "Man-talk" and that the Bible is inadequate to accurately record what God has in mind("The New Hermeneutics" The Church Enters The Twenty First Century). These followers in their own words "oppose logic and reasoning"(A Guide To Contemporary Hermeneutics). In fact some argue that "contemporary authors are better qualified than Bible experts" to understand the Bible, which they view as a "secular masterpiece"("Genesis Reconsidered" Time). But scholars who oppose this view say "there is no way to interpret the Bible without the use of common sense(We Be Brethren: A study In Biblical Interpretation). These scholars say "It is incredible that God would deliberately construct a communication to man His creature, whom He knows perfectly and yet make it in such a way that man cannot understand it correctly"("The New Hermeneutics" The Church Enters The Twenty First Century). The Bible says we can understand it(John 8:32; 12:48; Ephesians 3:3-5; Second Timothy 3:16-17) if we study it with an open mind(How To Study The New Testament Effectively). The Bible uses logic(Acts 10, 11, 15). Jesus used scripture as proof(Matthew 19:4-5; Luke 16:29; John 5:39,46-47; 10:35). While the Catholic Version adds books called the Apocrypha, the Bible condemns the actions of taking away and adding to the Word(Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18,19). Did the Church write the Bible? If so, then let the Church change it. But if GOD wrote it, then let NO one change it!

Despite man's involvement, with careful reading, ANYONE can develop a proper understanding of God's Word(Jeremiah 29:13), the Bible(Bible Handbook- A Guide for Basic Bible Learning) the Absolute Word of Truth(John 8:32; 17:17; 18:37,38; First Timothy 3:14,15). Through God's continuing guidance(Revelation 22:13), THIS is how we got the Bible(Second Peter 1:21; Second Timothy 3:16).
