Many people have come to me and asked quesions about Las Vegas and the area.
Here are some FAQ's:

Q: I don't like gambling. Is there anything else to do there?
A: You bet there is! No one is going to force you to put a penny (yes there are penny slots!) into a machine. (You must be 21, and will be asked to leave the gambling area if you are not.)

Q: How hot is it there?
A: HOT!! But it's a dry heat--you know, like an oven! Summers tend to get a bit high, usually over 100.

Q: Does it rain there?
A: Not often, but watch out when it does! I was once caught in a torrential downpour, driving my daughter's small car. Be very careful of the slippery road conditions and wash out areas.

Q: Are the shows worth it?
A: Honestly, only the show-goer can answer that. Are they spectacular? You bet! Are they pricey? Yep! Can you see a 'cheap' one? Sure! Just remember you get what you pay for! Lounge shows are usually free for the price of a drink and many are very good. This is where the stars start.

Q: Isn't there a 'steamy' side to Las Vegas?
A: Yes there is. Most large cities have one. You don't have to be a part of it unless that is what you are looking for.

Q: I heard the food is cheap. Is that true?
A: Yes. They would rather have you spend your money in the casino! Most hotels offer a wonderful dinner buffet for about $10, complete with steaks cooked to order, prime rib, roast beef, turkey, ham, seafood and more. A lunch buffet is about the same price as lunch at the golden arches. (Yes, they are there too! It's different to see them with all neon lights.) Breakfast buffets offer omelets cooked to order, fresh fruit and more. And, yes, you can find restaurants in every hotel and on the strip that will serve you from a menu!

Q: Do I need to rent a car?
A: Traffic in Las Vegas is horrendous, especially on the strip. Lots of rubber necking to see the sites and taxis everywhere. The locals avoid the strip as much as possible! There are trolleys, buses, monorails to/from selected hotels. A good way to see it all is to walk! Most hotels offer shuttle services.

Q: What about bringing children to Las Vegas?
A: The following appeared in our local paper:
Dateline: Monday, September 1, 1997
Gannett News Service
"Nevada casinos are increasing safeguards for kids who tag along while their parents roll the dice. Starting Sept. 13, unaccompanied children under 18 are barred from amusement arcades and small game rooms ...between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. weeknights and midnight and 5 a.m. weekends."

"...a growing number of properties are appealing to an adults-only clientele."

There are places to occupy and entertain children's interests, but for the most part, I personally feel that Las Vegas is NOT the place to bring children. We brought Pooh with us when she was 18 and she was bored due to lack of being allowed on the casino floors when we were doing the gambling thing!

Q:How's the golfing?
A:I am sure the golfing is great in Vegas. But, not being a golfer, I can only refer to the information that I have from the Nevada Visitor's Guide. There are 7 public golf courses in the Las Vegas/Henderson area. Let me know if you need more information.

Q: Are there RV parks in Vegas?
A: YES! Vegas loves RV'ers! There are parks with as few as 19 spaces and as many as 400! All within the Las Vegas area... A little further out (within a 1/2 hour or so) there are more.

Q: How much does it cost to get from the airport to the strip?
A: Depending on the mode of transportation you take, a shuttle bus is as little as $4 per person; a taxi is about $10 for a party of up to 5 people; or rent a limo and split the costs with others in your group for $30-$40.

If you have a question that wasn't asked and answered here, drop me a note. I'll do my best to get you the answer and post your question here for others to learn from.
