About Royalist

Royalist English Toy Spaniels was founded in England in the 1980s with the purchase of our first English Toy, Rupert, from the world-renowned breed expert, Alicia Pennington. After coming to America, Rupert went on to become Am. & Can. Ch. Tudorhurst Royal Sovereign and quickly joined the ranks of the Top Ten English Toy Spaniels in the U.S. He was soon joined by his half sister Charlotte, Ch. Tudorhurst Tiger Lily, and the Royalist line was launched.

Charlotte was bred to one of America's top stud dogs and produced in her first litter the lovely male special Ch. Royalist Noblesse Oblige, a Group-winning show dog who has won many admirers with his type and showmanship. Showing is an integral part of the overall breeding program at Royalist as our goal is to have an unbroken line of Champions who excel both in the show ring and in the whelping box.

Our breeding program is based on blending the best of English lines with the best of American to capitalize on the strengths of both countries. We aim for sound healthy dogs with good temperaments who are also pretty and of excellent breed type. Whether the English Toy is destined for the ring or to become a cherished family pet, we place our dogs only where they will live as a fully integrated part of the family. We also try to match the personality of the puppy to the situation in which he or she will live. This is a more important consideration than the male versus female question, as both genders make good pets.

Our dogs are health tested for heart conditions, patella luxation and eye disease before they are bred. Naturally, only dogs who clear all the testing are used in our breeding program. Puppies are also tested for the above before they go to their new homes and buyers are furnished with a current health certificate, innoculation record, feeding instructions, and 5 generation pedigree.

In addition to their successful show careers, our dogs are also our pets. Each litter is raised in our family room with plenty of personal attention and socialization, preparing the puppy for successful integration into his future home. Our son Alexander also prepares them for interaction with children along with neighbours' children who delight in playing with the new additions. We find English Toys to be very kind with children and especially tolerant of their attentions. As with all breeds, adult supervision is important, as well as following rules such as always sitting on the floor with the puppies and no carrying of the babes in little arms.

English Toys are the consummate companion dog. Bred and refined for more than four hundred years as the pet of choice for the Kings and Queens of England, their ability to provide regal company is unrivaled. In today's hustle and bustle world, they give their lucky owners civilized society with unlimited love, and grace drawing rooms with an eighteenth-century presence. The English Toy Spaniel is truly a dog of high style for the connoisseur.

Prospective buyers will often have to wait for a Royalist English Toy Spaniel, as we emphasize quality with individual attention for each dog, over quantity. Each litter is bred with a specific goal in mind and hopes to advance the overall quality of the breed. However, they are well worth the wait.
