   He died from lockjaw after running a splinter into the ball of his hand while engaged in erecting the depot building of the Cincinnati, Washington & Baltimore Railroad, in this city (Chillicothe).

      Scioto Gazette, May 27, 1885. MISS NANNIE SHEPHERD. "The above portrait, taken from the Cincinnati Enquirer, is an accurate likeness of Miss Nannie Shepherd, who lost her life in the terrible holocaust at Cincinnati, on Thursday last. Her remains were brought to this city on train No. 3, Sunday afternoon and taken to the residence of her uncle Mr. Cotman Phillips, on Bridge street. Miss Shepherd was the daughter of Joseph and Ellen Shepherd, one of the twins born to Mr. and Mrs. S., at the old family residence on East Second street (146 E. 2nd), now occupied by Mr. Smith Pursell. She was in her twentieth year. Her father died some 15 years since, from lockjaw caused from running a splinter into the ball of his hand while engaged in erecting the depot building of the Cincinnati, Washington, & Baltimore Railroad, in this city. Her parents were both born and raised in this city, and they and their parents before them were well known to all our older citizens. After her husband's death, Mrs. Shepherd removed with her family to Cincinnati, where three of her brothers had previously removed, and where they have since resided. The funeral, which was largely attended by sympathizing friends, took place at 4 o'clock, Dr. Biggs officiating. The remains were interred in the family lot at the cemetery. There has seldom, if ever, been so profuse and handsome a display of floral decorations at the funeral in this city, they being the gifts of sympathizing friends in Cincinnati; and they betokened the love and respect in which she was held in her new home in that city. She was a young lady of rare beautty of mind and person, and had many friends and admirers in this city, won during a brief visit here last summer. Miss Shepherd died in Cincinnati; May 22nd, from injuries received during the Sixth street fire, aged 22 years."
