MUM'S HOMEMADE BUNS
This recipe was my mom's recipe for homemade buns and cinnamon buns. It is the only one I have ever used and I just love them. Give them a try and see what you think!!
l c. evaporated milk l c. water (warm enough when mixed with the milk it is lukewarm) l/2 c. granulated sugar l/2 c. Crisco oil l tsp salt.
Combine ingredients and mix in mixer. Combine l pkg. plus l teaspoon powdered yeast dissolved in warm water. Add yeast liquid to above ingredients and stir until sugar is dissolved. (Mix in mixer) Then add 2 c. flour and stir. Keep adding flour until it is no longer sticky and you can handle it. Put on floured surface and knead for about 30 minutes. Put into greased bowl and grease top of dough with softened margarine. Cover and put in warm place out of draft until doubled in size. Push it down in bowl again and let rise until doubled again. When it has risen double, pinch off dough smaller than you want the size of bun and put on greased cooky sheet or l3 x 9 pans. They can touch if you want them to. Prick with fork and when they have risen again bake in 375 degree oven for l5 minutes. Take out and while hot grease tops with margarine. Let cool in pans.
TO MAKE CINNAMON ROLLS: Take ball of dough and roll to about l/2" thick. Spread with softened butter and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and chopped nuts. Roll like jelly roll and then cut into l/2" circles and put in greased pan and bake same as buns.
This is the only bun recipe my mother ever used. I think she got it out of a very old local church cookbook. My mom was one of the best cooks around! |
