MY MILITARY UNITS

I took my basic training at Ft Jackson, SC, at the very top of the famous "Tank Hill", in March of 1965. My Military Police Advanced Individual Training was taken at Fort Gordon, Georgia, where the MP School was located prior to it's moving to Ft McClellan, Alabama.

My first assignment was to Korea, from August 1965 until September 1966, where I was assigned to the 7th MP Company, 7th Infantry Division. Initially I was assigned to the Security Platoon, at Camp Casey and later became the Desk Clerk for our platoon. During this tour, I also worked at Camp Kaiser as the Detachment Clerk, and also back at Camp Casey in the Orderly Room. During my tour, I was promoted from PVT E2 to SP4.

My next assignment was to the 111th MP Detachment at Ft McClellan, Alabama. I was only assigned here a month, September 1966 to October 1966. I worked as a "line" MP while assigned to the unit. I was not satisfied with "stateside" MP Duty, and very shortly after arriving here, I reenlisted for duty in Vietnam.

My unit of assignment in Vietnam was with the 545th MP Company, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), at Camp Radcliffe, AnKhe, RVN. I was in country from October 1966 until October 1967. While assigned to the unit, I was promoted to the rank of Sergeant E5.

Towards the end of my tour of duty in Vietnam, I put in an ITT to go back to Korea. It was approved and back I went. I again was assigned to the 7th MP Company, 7th Infantry Division. I was immediately sent to Camp Kaiser, where I worked as Desk Sergeant. I later was moved into MPI. I was assigned there from October 1967 until July 1968 when I had to come home on emergency leave.

I came to Atlanta, Georgia (which is my hometown) on emergency leave. I became attached to the 525th MP Company while waiting on approval of a compassionate reassignment. It was approved and I stayed at Ft McPherson, Georgia from August 1968 until July of 1969. While here, I worked as a line MP, as well as Training NCO, and finally as PSNCO. It was here that I met my wife, Judy, while working part-time at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium for the Atlanta Braves.

I spent the next year, July 1969 until August 1970 stationed at The Pentagon. I performed security duty for the NMCC (National Military Command Center). I was assigned to the Office of the Joint Chief of Staff. While I was assigned to OJCS, I was promoted to the rank of SSG E6.

My next assignment was with the 503rd MP Company, 3rd Armor Division, headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. I was assigned to the 2nd Platoon in Gelnhausen, with duty in Budigen. I remained in Budigen for a year until the MP Station closed and I was moved to Gelnhausen where I performed the duty of a Desk Sergeant. I was stationed here from October 1970 until October 1973. It was during this assignment that my son James was born.

After my three-year tour in Germany, I was transferred to Fort Benning, Georgia where I was assigned to the 988th MP Company from November 1973 until June 1977. I performed many functions while assigned here, from line duty MP, to Reenlistment NCO, PSNCO, and finally PSNCO for the newly formed Law Enforcement Command. While at Ft Benning, I came out on the E7 list and my daughter, Janet, was born.

After Ft Benning I took a short break from the Military Police Corps and served on Recruiting Duty for a couple years. I was assigned to a small Station in Maysville, Kentucky, which was a part of the Cincinnati, Ohio District Recruiting Command. I made SFC E7 while at this assignment. I served as a recruiter from June 1977 until June of 1980.

After my tour as a Recruiter, it was off to Germany once again. This time I was assigned to The 42nd MP Group (Customs). Here, I became a First Sergeant, and was assigned to Detachment A was located in Karlsruhe, between Heidleburg and Stuttgart, on the French border. The dates of my assignment here were from August 1980 to June 1984.

My final assignment before retirement was with Company B, Headquarters Command (MP), at Fort Stewart, Georgia. At that time Ft Stewart was the home of the 24th Infantry Division. While waiting for retirment I worked as the Administrative NCO for the Provost Marshal's Office. I came to Ft Stewart in July 1984 and stayed until I retired in July of 1985.
