Cabernet Sauvignon~Excellent.
Dominates in all the better Bordeaux vineyards. Also
grown in northern and central Italy, Spain, Pottugal,
eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Romania, Yugoslavia).
Pinot Noir~Very good.
No wine in France is entitled to the name Burgundy
unless it is made from 100 percent Pinot Noir-the
noblest of red-wine grapes, along with Cabernet
Sauvignon.
Syrah~Very good.
Dominates in the northern Rhone, where it is used
exclusively for Hermitage, Cote Rotie, and other
reds; could probably be successful in other parts of
Europe such as Spain.
Nebbiolo~Excellent.
The most distinguished red grape of the Piedmont in
Italy; also grown in the Valtellina district of
Lombardy.
Gamay Beaujolais~Good.
Not to b confusd with Gamay Noir (listed below),
which is the grape of Beaujolais.
Gamay Noir~Very good.
There are many subvarieties. The best grows in
Beaujolais.
Sangiovese~Very good.
The principal red variety of Tuscany; also grown in
Emilia-Romagna and Abruzzi.
Barbera~Good.
Grows in northern Italy, primarily in Piedmont.
Zinfandel~Good.
European origin uncertain, but appears related to
varieties in southern Italy, such as Primitivo.
Brought to California by Count Haraszthy.
Grenache~Good.
The grape of Tavel Rose', most of the Cotes du Rhone,
and some of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Widely planted in
the Rioja of Spain.
Merlot~Very Good.
Blended with Cabernet in the Me'doc and St. Emilion;
the leading grape in Pomerol and the only one used
for the great Chateau Pe'trus.
WHITE WINES
Chardonnay~Excellent.
Grows in Burgundy, Chablis, Champagne, parts of
Italy, Spain, California, Oregon, Washington and
eastern Europe.
Johannisberg Riesling~Excellent.(White
Riesling).
Grows in the Rhine and Moselle valleys of Germany and
in Alsace, Austria, Luuxembourg, and northern
Italy.
Chenin Blanc~Very good.
Grows in the Loire Valley, particularly in Vouvray
and Saumur.
Sauvignon Blanc~Very good.(also Fume'
Blanc).
Grows in Sauternes, Graves, and the Loire Valley;
also northern and central Italy.
Gewurztraminer~Very Good.
Grows in Germany, Alsace, Austria; also Italian
Tyrol.
Colombard~Fair.
Grows in French commune of Cognac-used for
Brandy.
Folle Blanche~Good.
Formerly widespread in the commune of Cognac but is
now replaced there by the Ugni Blanc. Does well in
the Loire Valley around Nantes as Gros Plant. Called
Picpoul in the French Midi; yields light wine.
Trebbiano~Fair.(or Ugni Blanc).
Known as Ugni blanc in France and grown in the Cognac
and Armagnac regions; as Trebbiano it is widely grown
in central Italy, especially Tuscany, Umbria, and
Latium.
