Chilao
High in the Angeles National Forest, this camp is more for
the person who like to "get away from it all". Easy access to water
and restrooms. The Visitor Center has good information and great exhibits
for the kids. Partial closure in the winter, so check availability before
you go. Very enjoyable! |

Horse Flats
One of the less populated camps, Horse Flats is very similar
to Chilao. Located on Highway 2 above La Crescenta. Pine trees provide
good shade, and there are hiking trails to take advantage of while enjoying
the scenery. Very natural with little landscaping and maintenance, there
is more of a feel like you're in the wilderness than most of the other
campgrounds in lower elevations. Due to the altitude, it can get cold at
night regardless of season, so bring those woolies! |

Buckhorn
Located far up Angeles Crest, Buckhorn camp is another wilderness type
camping area. squirrels, deer, and an occasional Buckhorn sheep can be
seen on the mountainside. |

| Soledad Located in Acton, Ca. off the 14 freeway just 40 minutes from the San Fernando Valley, Soledad is a Thousand Trails membership campground. There is a lot to do in the "preserve" (as it is called in the brochure) with fishing, adult and family lodges, two pools, spa, movie theater(!), great camp-restaurant (with great meal prices), and more. Varied camping spots from grassy and near the restrooms, to almost primitive desert camping (my favorite). If there is anything I'd complain about is the train track running 50 yards form the nicest spots. That 2:45am train whistle blowing is tough to sleep through! |
