Long time ago, in the western province err.. campus of NTU, in the year 1999.....
Back then, lindy hop was unheard of except to the privileged few.. Then, some students who were learning the dance from YMCA, Singapore decided that it was a great dance and that keeping it to themselves was unfair. Thus, for the first time, NTU students were introduced to the energy, speed and dynamism that is the unmistakable signature of this 80 year old Afro-American dance.
The club was aptly named Kinetics. What else can describe something that involves so much energy and speed in just one word?
Since then, the club has performed various times at both school and public functions. As a sub-club of the Cultural Activities Club of NTU, Kinetics has put up lindy hop and Charleston numbers for CACs lunchtime and external concerts, and performed at the Village Market at Raffles City, Liang Court and in the various HDB estates.
Kinetics has been providing weekly lessons to students interested in learning lindy hop. The club features both a social dancing, as well as a performance group. Social dancing, where guys and girls come together to dance, allows people to express their creativity in many ways and of course to get to know more people. Performance would be a different thing altogether, where you will do chorographed moves which include things like simple air steps (which most of the time, involves some girl in the air) and also other stuff like styling and jazz steps.
In July 2002, Kinetics engaged local dance company Jitterbugs Swingapore, headed by internationally renowned lindy hopper Sing Lim, to come teach lindy hop in NTU. Sing has brought with her years of experience in teaching and dancing that has contributed to a growing emphasis on the social aspect of dancing. The social aspect of lindy allows dancers to interact and make new friends, and not just in Singapore, but also in any part of the world, where the lindy hop is danced.
Through Sing, members of Kinetics have had the opportunity to meet the legendary Frankie Manning, as well as members of the Harlem Hot Shots (formerly the Rhythm Hot Shots, widely considered to be one of the best swing dance groups in the world).
Kinetics will continue to provide lindy hop lessons in NTU and promote lindy hop in Singapore. Come along and join us during your three years in NTU. Chances are you won’t regret it! For more information, just drop us a mail! =)
One more thing. Regarding performances, we welcome invitations to perform at events. Do contact us by email, as well as to discuss the charges for non-charity events.
