National Black Arts FestivalWho We Are

:A Message From The Directors

Managing Director

Many of us in the arts community feel that art not only expresses the human condition, but has the capacity to transform and deepen our understanding of who we are, where we have been and what can be. Great art not only pleases but provokes, challenges and stimulates the heart, mind and soul.

With an increased appreciation of the arts and their relevancy in our everyday lives, the National Black Arts Festival is programming year-round activities to develop and nurture artists; expand collaborative opportunities between artist and audience; and facilitate the development of new work. We are broadening and deepening our scope with the expectation of heightening the nation's awareness and appreciation of the many treasures from artists of African descent. As an institution, the NBAF will assume its rightful place as advocate for the creation and preservation of art and culture. We will continue to produce a biennial festival as our signature event; but, we will also seek to develop greater audiences through educational programs, as well as hosting events with other organizations.

Our successful transition will be from a two week biennial event to an ongoing arts institution. We intend to be a year-round presence in the Atlanta community and beyond in order to continue to grow NBAF into a respected international institution. The NBAF Summer Music Camp is one effort offering expanded educational programs for young people and adults. Middle school-age youngsters are taught traditional theory and music skills in conjunction with the "roots of traditional African American music," an exciting NewWave curriculum.

The NBAF Summer Dance Workshop, an outgrowth of our year-round ArtReach Program in Dance, gives us great pride and pleasure. Arthur Mitchell, an icon of dance, has agreed to join us this summer in conducting a workshop for students, as well as presenting "An Evening of Conversation with Arthur Mitchell" on August 12, 1997.

We salute the new NBAF leadership provided by Ingrid Saunders Jones, vice president, corporate external affairs for the Coca-Cola Company. She succeeds founder Michael Lomax as the board chair person. We are enthusiastic about our new initiatives and anticipate an exciting celebration for the 10th Anniversary of the NBAF, July 10-19. We will take our cue from the arts and the artists-we will swing like the jazz musician, soar like the dancer, and dig deeply like the painter and writer for the images and words which speak so powerfully of our experiences and aspirations.
