A set of
triplet marble obelisks stand at the Central cemetery entrance
regally commemorating the life and times of John Barr, the man
who built Ardrossan, and who served as first Provost of Ardrossan for 37 consecutive years; a substantial number of committee meetings, planning workshops and whist drives in anyone's book. Naturally, being the provost he gets the biggest obelisk in the middle; his wife gets the smaller left hand one with a vase on the top, and his son gets the one on the right - which would probably have had some Meccano on top - if it had been invented. In honour of his administrative achievement, and the fact he had a penis, he got a much bigger, wider street named after him nearer the station and handier for the shops ... |
