In 1969 a partnership between messrs Crowther and Colley began with coaching and private hire work, from its base under the central railway station in Leeds. Its first vehicle was a 1954 Bristol LS6G coach bought from Glevum, Gloucester, quickly followed by an AEC coach with Burlington body. The wheels were in motion and Black Prince Coaches were on the road to becoming one of the largest independent operators in Leeds.
Deregulation in 1986 enabled Black Prince to enter the bus market and many services were registered starting and terminating in its home town of Morley, the first route was the X51 which linked Morley and Leeds, as stated previously more services were registered and these ran to most parts of the city. In 1994 the services of Pudsey Based Amberley Travel were taken over, the main service the 88 still operates today and as a jesture to this operator the buses are painted in the blue and white of Amberley.
Varied vehicle types have been used (please refer to fleetlist) including a vast fleet of Volvo Ailsa's, Routemasters and Scania's. Today the fleet has batches of Ex Newport and MTL Scania double deckers along with bought new Optare bodied MAN's and East Lanc's Scania single deckers.
The fleet was initially painted in green and cream but this clashed with its larger neighour Yorkshire Rider so the red and yellow livery was adopted and still continues today all be it not every bus painted in the same way or style.
A difficult time in 1997 resulted in the fleet being halved this ended the life of the Ailsa's with Black Prince, but a separate operating company was formed "Leeds Surburban Buses" using vehicles from the main fleet and purchasing the fleet of ex Newport Scania single deckers. Both companies sharing workshop facilities, fleet numbering and ticketing systems. This continued growth has enabled the company to raise the average vehicle age to compete with the bigger operators and to continue to provide people of Leeds with Independent Bus Travel.
