1986

The 86 Fiero brought about a exciting new design for the GT model, titled the fastback. Also, in mid-year production the 5 speed Getrag built transmission was finally offered. The Fiero still lacked in cruising distance (with the 10 gallon gas tank) and storage space. The new looks were put to the test in Automobile Magazine . The magazine tested the Honda CRX Si, Fiero GT and the Toyota MR2, which was also mid-engined. The Fiero GT did not fair well in categories such as steering response (a problem from day one), maneuverability, ergonomics and storage space . It did, however, do well in categories like ride, braking, and engine . Overall in the comparison the MR2 came out on top, CRX Si second and Fiero GT last. The new design of the Fiero GT wasn’t the only big news in the Fiero world, Fiero racing was on the upcoming. The SD-4 (Super Duty 4 cylinder) Fiero raced in the I.M.S.A. road racing competitions. The SD-4 had a 3.0L 4 cylinder that pulled off a remarkable 0-60 in 4 seconds. The car’s first win was also a first win for a American Marquee in 12 years of I.M.S.A., GTU class racing. The win took place at Michigan International Speedway. Another Fiero racing success came about in the SCCA pro-rally open class. The team was sponsored by 1,500 assembly workers at the Fiero plant (Click here For IMSA GTU Fiero Info)
