"Always Rock the Mic and Make Sure You Never Miss!"

That is "Rule One" for the Soulistic MCs, a two man crew from the Detroit area bringing beats and hymes minus the gimmicks that so many Michigan rappers think they need.. King Linus and DJ Wiz each take the mic, with Linus being the primary MC, and Wiz playing the Dove to Linus' Pos... Wiz also gets busy on the turntables for some nice results.

Their debut underground CD, Rule One, has kicked up a lot of dust. It has made so much noize in fact, that they have been signed to a distribution deal by Eminem's former company! With the CD available all around Michigan, you peeps should check it out right now instead of waiting for them to blow up.. Remember Eminem? Don't front on the mid west.

The best cuts inclued the very old school "Soulistics" in which the crew samples "La Di Da Di" on the hook.. Definitely tight... "The Battle" is another old school joint, showing what happens if you step to the Soulistics.. "Supa Dupa" seems to borrow the bassline from "Dogg Pound Gangstaz," for excellent results, the catchiest of all the 12 cuts.. And "Begin Again" is a great way to end an album.

Jay.Seagraves.com is an official promotional affiliate of the Soulistic MCs, and I encourage you to check these guys out, and give them their due...  Check their homepage, or hit them up with an email.. Either way, make sure they know you heard of them from me..

Rule One Review

Soulistic MC's/ Rule One (1998) [cd]
Beats 3, Rhymes 3, Creativity 3.5
Overall: 3 (Good)
Rule One |
Coming from Detroit is a pair of hip hoppers named DJ Wiz and King Linus. What is unique about these guys is that they are HIP HOPPPERS--- AND-- from DETROIT-- two things that don't usually go together.. My former associate Davey Dub (aka Lyrical Slasher) is down with them, and I heard "Supa Dupa" in RA somewhere, so when I saw the album in stores, I picked it up, and I'm glad I did.. Without using profanity, Soulistics drop some dope hip hop over some dope (if rugged) beats.. King Linus is a tight emcee with an excellent delivery.. DJ Wiz also takes the mic, and he sounds a lot like Chali 2Na from J5.. While both of them sound at home behind a micraphone, neither is flying my head with what they are saying. Still, this is a dope joint for being such an underground effort, and I'm sure that Soulistics will only continue to blossom and grow.
Best Cut: "Supa Dupa"
