| Here she is. My 1986 Monte Carlo SS. I used to have a 76 Chevy pickup with a mildly built 350, but I sold that in the spring of 97. Not only were the floorboards rusted through, but I couldn't deal with 10 mpg. So I started looking around the used car lots, and one day I saw an ad for a Monte Carlo SS and went to check it out. When I test drove it, I just knew it would be mine. I don't know what happened, but it was kind of like the first time Arnie Cunningham saw Christine. I bought the Monte a few days later and now I'm really glad I did. I just love her. She's got about 113,000 miles but still runs great. She has the original 305 HO engine (L69), with the original 200-4R automatic overdrive trans and 3.73 rearend gears. I've added a Dynomax cat-back exhaust, and a K&N filter. The filter is in an open housing I made myself (pictures forthcoming). Aside from a few minor replacement parts here and there, she's in great condition overall. |

| Since I have a scanner now, I'll soon be able to put up the pictures of the time I drove at Charlotte Motor Speedway. (See below for details). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I also had a great experience with the car last Thanksgiving. My family and I always go to my aunt and uncle's in Winston-Salem for that weekend. While there, my dad and I drove down to Charlotte Motor Speedway. They were having a deal on the day after Thanksgiving where if you buy at least $50 worth of merchandise (die-cast cars, shirts, etc.), you get to drive your own car around the track. Since I'm addicted to NASCAR die-cast cars, I was able to spend $50 in no time. (I guess they were trying to get rid of last year's stuff, so everything was on sale). After signing the "if you wreck, it's your own dumb fault" waiver, we drove through the turn four tunnel, and onto pit road. I lined up behind the pace car and we waited until there were about a dozen cars in our group. I can't explain how damn cool it felt to pull off of pit road into turn one. I was totally taken off guard by how steep the banking is in the turns, because you can't tell on TV. It felt like the car was going to flip over. I soon discovered, however, that feeling goes away once you step on the gas. They told us NOT to pass each other, so we had to stay in line and behind the pace car. There was a lot of slack in the group, so I backed off in turn two, which left a big gap between me and the car in front of me. So coming onto the backstretch, I opened up the throttle just a bit and got up over 70mph before I caught up to the car in front of me and had to slow down again. All in all I did 3 and a half laps, and it was worth every penny of the fifty bucks. The best part was sitting on pit road for 10 minutes wondering how many great drivers and great cars have been in that very spot. If you ever get a chance to do something like this, DO IT! I had a blast, and I'm doing it again next year. (My dad rode shotgun, and took a bunch of pictures. I plan to have the pics on this page sometime in the future). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
