We stayed last night in Little America that is a hotel and an entire town. In the 1890's the future founder of the hotel was herding his sheep across the desert and was caught in a horrible blizzard. He thought that night and for years after how wonderful it would be for someone to build a house or shelter in that middle of nowhere place for people in need. In 1920, he opened a hotel there and named it Little America after the shelter in Antarctica.
The place has become much more than a hotel. On the far end there is a gas station, store, and restaurant just for truckers. I have never seen so many trucks in my life (Dad, you would have loved it!) They said there were about 70 that night, but sometimes that have up to 200. Next there is another gas station, store, and restaurant for RV, trailer, and car camping folks. Everyone there had a 35 cent ice cream in their hand. On the other end was the hotel, a nice restaurant, gift shop, and post office.
We walked into the lobby and asked for the best room they had which turned out to be a two-bedroom suite with a marble bathroom, refridgerator, huge TV, two sliding glass doors, free movies and a small patio overlooking the grass and trees. The best part was that the room was less expensive than a typical hotel room.
The room was incredibly comfy and it was such a good deal that we decided to stay another day. We slept in and spent the day watching movies, looking at all the trucks, cross-stitching, and catching up on email and the web page. It was a wonderfully needed break.
