8/7/98

We woke up pretty early this morning, and went fishing for a while. Nope, still no fish… anyway, after breaking down camp, we hit the road and went up to the Gros Venture Slide. This is a HUGE landslide that created a natural dam many many years ago, then later broke through destroying a town with flooding. Anyway, there was a short hike with signs describing the situation and the new landscape.

Just south of the park, we headed into Jackson Hole, Wy for gas. Heading out of town, we took hwy 22 towards the west, since we needed to get to Idaho Falls to the nearest AAA, and we needed some more maps. Anyway, 22 was a really good road. Steep (10%) grades up to the summit, and down the backside, tight corners, and little traffic. Through Victor and down to 26, we headed into Idaho Falls. Unfortunately, we tried to push it a little too hard. The 90 mile stint ended with about 40 miles of dead straight 2 lane road with lots of cross traffic, and incredible (95-100) degree heat. By the time we got to Idaho Falls, I was wasted, and Janet similarly hot and tired.

After a quick stop at a supermarket for some cheese, pepperoni sticks and bread, we headed for the falls for a leisurely lunch. Following lunch, we crossed town to the AAA. Once we got the maps and camp books, we figured out where to go for the night. We were heading in the general direction of Colorado, and had originally intended to backtrack out 26, but I just couldn’t do that road again. Instead we headed down I-15 to Pocatello. The speed limit was 75, so I just set the throttle lock there (a nice sweet spot for the bike) and droned down the interstate. It was a really nice ride, actually. We were riding through small towns and farmland, just checking out Idaho.

At hwy 30, we headed a few miles east into Lava Hot Springs and a private campground. We chose it because it was on our route, had showers and laundry, and quite frankly there was not much else around. It was fairly nice, right on a river. We walked into town for groceries and beer, then came back and did laundry and took showers. Pretty uneventful night, nice level lot, low noise, I think we both slept pretty well, and I even slept in late for the first time in a few days.
