8/2/98

Well, we woke up fairly early and were still dry!, but everything else was wet. The sky had changed from fierce clouds to white, puffy, could-clear-anytime clouds. We spent the morning trying to dry things out and figuring out how to pack up wet.

By about 11:30 we were headed back to the "Going to the Sun Road" and Logan Pass. The drive was beautiful. Every inch of land was rock or some fabulous shade of green, lush from the frequent rains I imagine. There were purple, yellow, orange, and soft white wildflowers lining the road that I really was able to study the day before since the immediate roadside was all I could see. Today beyond the wildflowers were steep mountains up on one side as sheer drops to the valley on the other. The road and views were dramatic, worthy of all the things I've heard about it.

At the top at Logan Pass we walked through the Visitor Center and to a education nature trail out back. Just beyond the sign telling about Grizzly Bears was a real live Grizzly Bear! He was digging for food just like the sign said he would. There was quite a crowd, but we had a great view and of course we didn't have the camera. We walked across the road to just beyond all the people to a private spot with a great view over the road. We had cheese and crackers and were joined by a very precocious squirrel. Despite all his tricks, we didn't feed him!

We left Logan Pass and did the drive again as we left the park. From the park, the roads were incredible through the mountains and the woods past perfect farms and country homes. It was a great road scenic, twisty, fast and fun. I think David enjoyed our "reasonable and prudent" speed (Montana has no speed limit except to say that your speed should be reasonable and prudent). In late afternoon we decided to relax and find a campsite. At Salmon Lake we found a great site with a view of the lake through the trees. After setting up camp and laying out stuff from yesterday to dry, we went to town to pick up groceries for dinner. People at the store were friendly and nice. The campground had wonderfully dry wood and David made a huge fire. We roasted sausages for dinner and marshmallows for dessert. Sunset was gorgeous and there was a bright moon when it got dark. We cuddled up in the tent and went to sleep thankful for the warm, dry weather.

it was a wonderful day,
janet.
