"That suit must be hot, eh?"
I can't tell you how many times we heard that today. and yes, it was hot. again. eh.

Finally, an early morning start! Janet couldn’t wait to get out of that campground. I think the combination of crazy heat and lots of bugs started to get to her… A couple of hours of good riding down the road, we stopped in Kamloops to figure out where we wanted to go next. There were a few other motorcycles in the gas station we pulled into, one of which was a Gold Wing rider who was quite friendly. I suspect he has been travelling on his own for a while now… he was very anxious to talk. It was good though, he had great local knowledge, and helped us decide on a route for the next few days.

Anyway, we continued on to Salmon Arm where we spied a A&W and stopped for lunch. Great root beer floats, horrible burgers. Ah well, onward and eastward. We traveled along a scenic road, which was very beautiful in parts (big blue lake) but also had some slow spots. Perhaps I'm just getting jaded and spoiled by the great roads we had earlier in the trip up the CA, OR, WA coast. The roads weren't bad, just sort of boring. We were able to make good time though, we could hold a pretty constant 110kph (my mind is starting to work metric!) all day today, and managed to make about 350 miles total.

At about 2pm, we were drenched in sweat, following motorhomes, and getting overheated and, well, hot. We crossed over a small stream, and I ducked off the freeway onto a little dirt road that led back under the bridge. Two words: skinny dip :-)

Cooled off and happy again, we went through Glacier Park, which was incredibly beautiful. We pushed on into Golden, about an hour or so from Lake Louise, and grabbed a motel room. Once again, a town that very much gives me that Stephen King feel. HUGE mountains all around, ridiculously hot all night, bizarre colors in the sky at sunset, high winds and dust. eerie. They must be hard pressed for customers because when we asked the motel rate, the clerk replied "what can you pay?" For dinner we wanted pizza and beer, a local pizza place was happy to deliver and even pick up beer at the store for no charge.

As we suspected, we were unable to connect to our internet connection, since the 1-800 number that we use is not valid in Canada. We made a few phone calls just to let everyone know that we are still ok, and then after thinking about it for a while came up with a way to get back on the web. I won't get into the details of how, but it worked, and we were able to upload the last few days' worth of logs.

So, with that, I'm going to sleep. Tomorrow, we head into Lake Louise to grab a campsite for the weekend, and we are going to do day trips to Jasper and Banff. At least that’s the plan right now, but they have a way of changing on the fly, you know?

later
david.
