7/22/98

It is so friggin’ HOT!! It’s 9:30pm right now, and still about 90 degrees. and we are about 100 miles or kilometers or something north of the Canadian border in Skihist Provincial Park just north of Lytton. I thought it was supposed to be cold up here… ok, so we’ve said that every day now.

Anyway, about today. We woke up and needed showers this morning, and by the time we got all cleaned up and hit the road, it was 11:30 or so. Heading north on Whidbey Island, the views were spectacular. At Deception Pass we pulled in and shot a photo of the bridge (waaay up there) then we drove across it. Really neat area, I’m glad we ended up taking the ferry over there yesterday.

Once again, we tried our luck at a Mexican Restaurant, this time in Mt. Vernon WA. It was actually very good! Did I mention it was hot out? We took off North on some backroads that parallel Hwy 5 up to Sumas (a border town) and crossed into Canada. I had planned on going through in Blaine on 5, but we ended up here, so we went. I don’t know if it would have made any difference on 5 or not, but we got fully searched. Opened up all the bags, even made us unpack the dry bag (which holds tons of stuff and is a real pain in the ass to stuff). Anyway, since are not in fact smuggling any cigarettes or alcohol in, so they let us go. So, we repacked the bike, and took off at 60kph. Did I mention that it was hot? After this little strip search in the sun, we were both drenched in sweat…

The next couple of hours were beautiful. We went over some country roads (7 and 9 I think), then took 1 North up here to Lytton. Its interesting, many roads in Canada are marked on our AAA map as scenic, though none of the ones we did today are. And yet, they were most definitely the most scenic we’ve seen yet this trip.

This campsite is amazing too. Not only is it just $9.50 Canadian (which is a bit less than that US, but I don’t actually know the rate), but all the sites are totally level, and free firewood is included. Though, as I may have mentioned, it is really hot, so who cares about firewood…

Tomorrow, ??
