7/17/98

After playing on the computer the previous night, I decided to feed my underfed TV addiction and stayed up until 4:30am watching really bad movies on HBO. Needless to say, I slept in. I woke to find David soaking in our whirlpool bath and reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. We then took a walk along the famous Seaside promenade, a boardwalk stretching two miles along the beach.

At about 2pm, we left Seaside to head for Portland along Highway 26. It was a really nice change from the previous few days up the coast. The ride took about an hour, was incredibly scenic, and completely devoid of motorhomes or any other traffic for that matter.

In Hillsboro, which is farmlands outside of Portland, we stopped to visit my cousin Curt. It was incredibly hot. We expected Portland to be rainy and cold, but it was 100 degrees and humid. We were completely drenched in sweat, but he let us in anyway. We went out to lunch, hung out for a while, and got to play with his puppy. It was good to see him.

Then off to Portland to meet up with James and Hope, the couple whos wedding we re-met at two years ago. They live in a fabulous old apartment building in a cool part of town. We had dinner at the pizza place on the corner and then savored a Guinness at an Irish pub with a great Irish band. It was hot and loud, so we opted to walk to the market, pick up a case of beer, and sit on their balcony catching up on old times. They were gracious enough to let us crash on their living room floor for the night.
