We woke up early in our beautiful campsite, thanks to our tent’s sunroof. We took a brief walk (actually a run) to the bathroom and then went back to sleep. I, being the great sleeper-iner that I am, slept for two more hours. We got up, again, and went on a hike through the campground. It was a really pretty place. Our first time loading up the bike went fine. We even found some extra space that we have now filled with snacks.
The morning was foggy which was the perfect companion to the sunny coast view we saw all day yesterday. We traveled up the coast past Fort Bragg. The best road was from the coast to Hwy 101. There were flagpersons monitoring the construction that unfortunately meant we had to wait for ten minutes, but fortunately meant we had a clear road ahead. The bike seemed to handle great, at least from my perspective… I saw the pavement screaming by and we even touched a foot peg!
Outside Leggett we drove through the Drive Through Tree. Pretty darn amazing… much more amazing than the Live Chimney Tree or the Tour Through Tree or the Trees of Mystery. We had lunch in a cute patio café in Leggett. So far we have kept our goal of no chain stores, only mom and pop shops, and we’ve met some good people. We rode a long stretch up 101 through Eureka and stopped at the Lost Coast Brewery. I had some good beer (David had some sips) and it was an interesting place. Lots of stuffed things hanging from the ceiling, playing Tom Petty, with SpeedVision on TV. David was happy.
We then took off and took all the scenic alternative roads. We even took a scenic alternative from a scenic alternative. To my amazement yet again, with no reservations we found the most wonderful campsite a few miles south of Crescent City. We are in the bed and breakfast of campgrounds. Every site has it’s own beautiful tree covering and there are ferns everywhere. We successfully made soup for dinner and are hoping we have stashed food enough so we don’t have a bear visiting tonight. The best part of course is the music… a ranger played the bagpipes for the campfire a few sites away and a youngster down the road was just learning to play the love song from Titanic on her flute. Needless to say, David has just consumed a fabulous bottle of beer and is now just fine with it all.
Until next time,
janet
well, I don’t have much to add to that… great day, great roads, the rest of the trip has a lot to live up to. I’ll just tell a quick bit about the bike. I mentioned in yesterday’s log that we were grounding out severely, and that I was going to try adding some air to the shock. Well, I did, and it helped. Its no cure all, but the centerstand is not touching down nearly as much, and we even hit a peg down today, something I had not done with a passenger before. Its really nice in the smooth sweepers, any bump in midcorner still plants the centerstand. While I was adding the air, I did a quick check of some fasteners. To no surprise, many were loose. I lost one windscreen screw, and there were a lot of misc. nuts and bolts that needed to be tightened. After today’s 5 miles on a washboard dirt road, I think I’ll re-check them all again before leaving tomorrow.
later,
david.
