7/13/98

We are in a tent in Mendocino right now. It’s about 9pm, 60 degrees and crystal clear. It’s so clear because there are tremendous winds! We’ve had a huge crosswind all day long up the coast, it made for some interesting riding at times. We got a really late start out of Santa Rosa today (2pm), and got in a few hours ago. A short day, but an absolutely beautiful ride. More of the same tomorrow as we will continue up the coast. I confirmed something that I had suspected about the Concours… with both of us and our luggage, there is drastically reduced cornering clearance. I’m grounding out the centerstand on a regular basis at speeds that I would not consider fast. I’ll try bumping the shock up to the max air (its an air shock) and see if it helps. It’s no biggie, but I’m rapidly losing my centerstand :-)

We ate dinner at a nice local pizza joint about one hour south of Mendocino. Either I was really hungry, or that was the best pizza I’ve ever had! Probably a combination of the two… we are camping at Van Damme State Park, walking distance to the beach. It’s a beautiful campground, one that we had seen before, but it’s always been full when we came by. I guess Monday night is a good time. We are right on a little stream under a grove of trees, very nice site.

We made some hot chocolate before hitting the tent, and realized the first thing that we had forgotten… we have no cups! We made the hot chocolate in the pan, and slurped it out with a spoon. Tomorrow we buy a mug.

Well, it’s officially dark now, and I’m officially tired. We have not gotten a full nights sleep in a very very long time, and I’m looking forward to my first day without an alarm clock! Good night all,

david.

One last little detail from a very proud aunt… as we were leaving Santa Rosa, Julia waved and said a very clear “bye” – for the first time ever. We felt it was a good sign that she chose our trip to debut this latest demonstration of her brilliance.

I am going a little nuts figuring out how to enjoy doing nothing, I mean, relaxing. Work still lingers in the back of my mind. They say the difference between kids and grown-ups is how long it takes for them to figure out they are on vacation… I’ll let you know when I get there.

janet.
