Bryan Herta/Alex Barron Accident Photo Series
Having stalled his race car after spinning to avoid a collision with his teammate, Bryan Herta begins to receive the aid of the CART Safety Team. Events take a dramatic turn when an out-of-control Alex Barron slides on a collision course. This photograph captures the moment milliseconds before impact. Note the CART Safety Team scrambling for safety. |
Barron strikes Herta's car flush on the nose. Herta's front wheels serve as a launching pad for Barron's car. Thankfully Barron is lifted up and over Herta's cockpit. Comparing this photo with the following, you will see that Barron's car and his detached front wing haven't come to a final resting place. |
The dust begins to settle, as everyone wonders about the fate of Bryan Herta. Soon we see movement from his cockpit, and then we hear him on the scanner talking to his crew. At one point the crew thought that he may be able to continue, to which Bryan replied "The car is f----d, and so is my left hand".

| This ranks as the strangest racing accident I have ever witnessed and I
was very fortunate to capture the moment on film. Here the CART Safety Team finishes the delicate operation of lifting a 1500 lb. race car, full of methanol off of Bryan Herta. Herta walked away with only bruises and a soiled driving suit.... Who could blame him? |
