Chevy Truck Identification

1963-65 TRUCK SERVICE PARTS IDENTIFICATION PLATE

The Chevrolet Truck Service Parts Identification Plate entered production, approximately December 1, 1982 on 1963 Series 80 D-M-T (2 Ton) and all Series 80 (2-1/2 Ton) Trucks. The plate is located below the G.V.W. Plate on the left kick panel of Conventional Cab (C-D-E-L-M-U) Models and on the left door pillar of Tilt (T) models. The information which appears on the Identification Plate (see illustration below) is for the most part self explanatory and when used in con- juncttion with the information shown on the G. V. W. Plate and in the Parts Catalog provides a positive means of identifying the type equipment installed on these vehicles. A detailed explanation of the information appearing on the Plate is as follows:

VEHICLE SERIAL NUMBER

This number should correspond to the number shown on the Vehicle Serial Number Plate attached to the upper left hinge pillar of all models, except School Buses and Chassis with Cowl Models. These models have the plate attached to the left side of the dash panel. The complete vehicle serial number includes the year of manufacture, model number (third digit omitted), plant designation and assembly sequence number.

ENGINE R.P.O. NUMBER Engine Series Number and Suffix Chart.

The Engine Regular Production Option Number identifies the type and cubic inch displacement of the engine. The letter following numerical designation is significant only to the Central Office P&A Department as it aids in identifying the vehicle model and certain other options used in conjunction with the particular Engine Option. This letter should not be confused with the "Type Designation" letters (shown on the Engine Series Number and Suffix Chart) which are part of the engine designation stamped on the Engine Identification Pad. In a few instances the letters "SE" will be inserted to designate those Engines which differ from both R. P.O. and Standard production. The Engine R.P.O. Number space will be blank when the vehicle has standard engine equipment. Refer to the G. V. W. plate for the certified Net horsepower.  When directing inquiries relating to Engine Parts to Central Office P&A Department, include both the Engine R.P.O. Number and the Engine Identification Number.

 

FRONT AXLE PART NUMBER AND CAPACITY

Front Axle Part Numbers do not appear in the Parts Catalog and are used only as a reference when directing inquiries to the Central Of ice P&A Department. The Axle capacity corresponds with model usage now shown in the Parts Catalog.

 

REAR AXLE PART NUMBER

Rear Axle Part Numbers do not appear in the Parts Catalog and are used only as a reference when directing inquiries to Central Office PBcA Department: The Axle Code and Ratio appear on the G.V.W. Plate and cor- respond with the Axle Chatt in the Parts Catalog.

 

TRANSMISSION PART NUMBER

Transmission Part Numbers are not necessarily listed in the Parts Catalog and are to be used only as a reference when directing inquiries to Central Office P&A Department. The Transmission Code appears on the G.V.W. plate and corresponds with the Transmission Identification Chart in the Parts Catalog.

 

AUXILIARY TRANSMISSION

Auxiliary Transmissions only apply to Tandem Models and will be designated as either 3Speed or 4Speed on the identification plate.

 

BRAKE SYSTEM

Air or hydraulic will be shown. Air over hydraulic brakes will be shown as hydraulic.

 

WHEEL BASE

The Wheel Base on all trucks except Tandem Models is the distance between the center lines of the Front and Rear Axles. For Tandem Models the Wheel Base is measured from the center line of the Front Axle to a point midway between the two Rear Axles. See the Model Identification Chart for applicable wheelbase dimensions.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT (SE#)

The Special Equipment Number is a four digit number for reference purposes only. It is of primary importance that this number be furnished when directing inquiries to the Central Office P&A Dept. On 1963, early production vehicles, without the Parts Identification Plate, the "SE" number appears on the lower right corner of the G.V.W. plate.

 

WHEELS

The information shown is self-explanatory. The type of Wheel is either "cast" or "disc" with the corresponding size and number of studs also indicated.

 

SPRINGS

The Spring R.P.O. Number, when used in conjunction with the Truck Spring Identification Chart in the Parts ; Catalog, will indicate the Spring capacity of the Front, Rear or Auxiliary Springs and model application. The space will. be blank if the Springs are standard production: If Springs are special, the letters "SE" will be shown.

 

CAB SEAT R.P.O.

The Cab Seat R.P.O. Number, when used in conjunction with the Cab Seat Option Chart in the Parts Catalog, will indicate the type of optional seat and the model application. The space will be blank if the seats are standard ~, production.

 

A Service Parts Identification Label has been included in the glove compartment on all 1966-67 Truck Models with the exception of the G and P Series. The information which appears on the Identification Label (see illustration) is for the most part self explanatory and when used in conjunction with the information shown on the GVW Plate and in the Parts Catalog provides a positive means of identifying the type equipment installed on these vehicles.

 

On the "P" series the Label is located on the inner body panel. The Service Parts Identification Label" is included on the G10-20 series beginning with the 1967 model and is located on the right rear panel near the spare tire.

 

This number should correspond to the number shown on the Vehicle Serial Number Plate attached to the upper left hinge pillar of all models, except School Buses and Chassis with Cowl Models. These models halve the plate attached to the left side of the dash panel. The complete vehicle serial number includes the year of manufacture; model number (third digit omitted), plant designation and an assembly sequence number.

OPTION NO. AND DESCRIPTION

 The first alphabetic letter and the following, two numeric digits indicates the Regular Production Option Number. This      option code used in conjunction with the Regular Production Option list found in this publication will enable you to determine the type of equipment installed on the vehicle. Name of equipment in the Option number column will indicate standard equipment for that model.
