Daytona First Round Qualifying

WEAVER TAKES POLE FOR DISCOUNT AUTO PARTS 200

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. (Feb. 9)--With first round of Goody's Dash Series qualifying complete, Scott Weaver of Shelby, N.C. will start his No. 2 Weaver Race Cars Pontiac on the Bud Pole for Friday's 21st Annual Discount Auto Parts 200 Presented by AC Delco Rapidfire at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Weaver, a 15 year veteran of the Goody's Dash Series, a part of the NASCAR Touring Division, was awarded the honor of the inside front row starting spot after posting a one lap qualifying speed of 56.865 sec. at an average speed of 158.270 mph. to beat out 62 other drivers who made qualifying attempts in this first round.

Weaver originally had been listed as fourth fastest immediately following the timed runs, but was later named the Pole winner when the first three fastest qualifiers had their times disallowed by NASCAR officials following the post qualifying inspections.

David Hutto of Rock Hill, S.C. turned in the fastest lap in the first round, but his time was later disallowed when his #16 Irmo Grading/Addy Dodge/Pendulum Industries Pontiac was found to have a non-conforming restrictor plate.

Second fastest on the track was Danny Bagwell of Cordova, Ala. But his lap was disallowed when the Sterling Casino Lines Ford was also found to have a restictor plate that did not conform to the NASCAR rules.

A non-conforming transmission led to the third fastest qualifier, Randy Humphrey's time being disallowed, leaving Weaver to notch his third career Bud Pole Award and his first such honor at the famed Daytona Speedway.

One more driver, Rusty Wise of Cherryville, N.C. who had qualified 11th on the field also had his time disallowed when his Invinca-Shield Pontiac was discovered to have a non-conforming transmission part.

As A result of todays qualifying runs, the first 25 spots are locked in for Friday's 80 lap event. Second round qualifying on Wednesday will determine the remaining 17 positions available in the Discount Auto Parts 200 including the three provisional starting spots that will make up the 42 car field.

Drivers who had their times disallowed today will be allowed a qualifying attempt in the second round on Wednesday afternoon.
