I'm currently shopping for a project car. I've always liked the body style of the 93-95 rx7. While searching the web for one I've noticed alot of rebuilt motors. Any comments as to why? I'm assuming hi temps! Also I'm sure there is a solution to the temp problem. Not that famillar with the rotories. Also looking at the s2000 honda. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I had a supra turbo it was fast, Like the rx7 more. Rx7 handles like a go-kart, and I did not yet modify the suspension. It is really frustrating that with as many enthusiasts as there are, such a car would not be available for new purchase. I was able to hear the engine of a heavily modified rx7 once..It was the sweetest sounding engine ever. Please tell me how to make it faster if you know how. I love the car. I have 147k on her, and she runs great. No major mods are needed for this car, she is in perfect balance. I love driving her on the CA coastline on all the twisties. The suspension could probably be a little tighter. I have heard Racing Beat has a plethor of bolt on suspension upgrades. No complaints at all with the rotary except that there are no more new cars U.S. bound with rotaries. When I see one, I will be in line with my checkbook, but I won't give up my '85

I just bought a Mazda. Everytime I start it up all my nieghbors come out to see if it is going to blow up. It smokes horribly. I've been told that that is common with rotary engines. It this true, or should I take it to be serviced? After about 15 minutes the smoke stops. The car is in really good shape. It has 130,000 miles on it and I know I have to replace the exhust on it.

Hi Paul, my name is Johan Booysen. I'm from Pretoria, South Africa. My mother language are Afrikaans so please, parden the spelling and grammer! I've been in love with the Rotary motor since who knows when, but at the same time I was rebuilding VW Beetles as a side line income. Then I decided to combine these two elements. I've pushed a 13B Turbo motor in the back of a 1959 Beetle with scary resul s at the street drag races. My problem is that I do not seem to be able to get any information from the locals around, because everybody beleives that a Rotary motor should stay in a Rotary car. How do you as a Rotary fan feel about a conversion like mine? I would sincerely appreciate your opinion. Please mail me at [email protected] With thanks Johan

I would like to improve my engine performance and would like to know also about the different high performance parts for the car. I also would like to know what would be the problem if at high RPM (anything over 2000)the car would not shift to 2nd gear a d when in 3rd gear it would not shift back down to 2nd. Could it be the syncronizer, is it the teeths for the gear or is the transmission bad? Please respond as soon as possible.

I'm rebuilding a car purchased with a dead engine. The manual (Haynes) is quite good but does not explain which end of the apex seal is to be ground off to arrive at the correct clearance to the side housing. Also would like to re-use the old side pieces with new apex seals... is this a poor idea?

I live in Dartmouth, NS, Canada and I can't go anywhere without people asking me to open the hood. Their is a limit d supply of them in NS, 10 if we're lucky. Anyway Mazda better make rotary cars for the rest of my life cause I'll never drive a piston engine again. Rotary Power rocks!!!!!

I tried sending you this email. It was bounced back. My 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE with just over 100K miles began to run rough and then began to loose RPM and then stopped. I took her to my local (small town) dealer. They charged me $50 and said it was a plugged catalytic converter and that it would cost $2K to fix. I towed it to a local cheep muffler shop and they cut off the convertor. Still no luck getting it to run. Back to the dealer who then charged me $25 to determine that the "engine is tired". I'm an engineer. I asked what that meant and they said they "think" it is the engine seals. So now I am trying to decide if I want to put any money into her or sell it to another RX-7 lover for parts etc. I'm in Warsaw, Indiana. I could get her towed to Ft. Wayne or South Bend. Any ideas? Thanks.

recently purchased by my son (against my advice). am having starting and drivability problems. car has two fuel pumps, and to get it to start, must flip switch to kill one pump, then it might start after cranking for 5-10 sec. Also, backfiring thru exhaus , miss in engine, and "break-up" after 3500rpm. also, some smell of gas once in a while. looks like plugs/wires/hoses all good. engine clean and no leaks(but trans leaks). I know a diagnosis will be very difficult based on infor i provided, but any help w ll be appreciated. thanks, ron

I have an 1982 rx7; about a week ago my car started acting like it was flooding out. The car starts o.k. but it won't stay running at idle. The only way it will stay running is if I keep the RPMs at 2500 or more. I have to pump the gas until it reaches the point of the 2500 rpm or better, even then the idle is still irratic. It jumps at a 500 rpm difference while I hold the accelerator steady as if it's not getting the gas properly. What is the problem? I have replaced the fuel pump and filter. The car has 208,500 miles. Couldit be the engine going out? Please email me with your reply.

Just purchased RX7 last week with modifications already made. We are now considering downpipe to eliminate secondary (and maybe primary) Cat. However, being new to rotary world, would like to view (full car) cutaway showing where all the parts are. I c n't even see the turbos when looking at engine. I had to take a Wankel apart back in school, but don't know what makes the rotor follow its path so it stays in contact with walls. In motion pictorials I can't tell what the hell would keep the ring gear a d sun gear in mesh? Need a basic primer so we can undersatnd these things from the inside out before modifying. Suggestions? have a 1989 RX7 Convertible. Just bought it has 85000 miles on it. I have never owned a rotory before. This car seems very slow to me. Have checked plugs, wires, timing, and a few other sensors. The car stalls and eratically idles at stop lights more so when the AC is on . (no smoke at all coming from the exhaust. Heavy carbon monoxide smell coming from exhaust though) I started the car, put it in first gear, started to give it a little gas and released the clutch very slightly when it locked up and stopped immediately. >From past experiences the noise that the car made sounded like the starter was hitting the fly wheel. I tried to start the car after the lock up. the starter would just click. Tried rocking the car in gear and it would not break free. Gears still shift fine and clutch still works. ( hopefully it is the starter and not motor or tranny) My question is -- Is it common for the starters to hang on RX7s ? Do you have any ideas or advice as to what I should do? I won't be able to work on the car until next week - I will pull the starter off first and give it a look. Thanks, Troy

Greetings from a potential RX-7 owner. I am strongly considering buying a 1991 RX-7. It seems to be in good shape. The question that I have is: The engine starts easily. After starting the engine begins repeatedly surging with a surge in engine revs bout every other second. Then after the engine warms up this action abruptly stops as though it is related to the warm up process. The engine runs well afterwards. Is this a sign of concern?? or impending expensive repairs?? Being a rookie in the rota y engine business I don't know what to make of this. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

standard 5-speed , no frills non turbo ,a/c 132,000 great miles with one episode of overheating when the plastic air bleeder blew out of the radiator assembly. Since then, starting is accomplished by holding the pedal to the floor in stead of not touching it at all, as in the past. Biggest problem is that white smoke and smell of coolant in that smoke makes me think the overheat and replacement of the radiator did something nasty to my engine. Car runs fine and smoke stops after 2 minutes or so. Gas milea e still is terrible at about 12-15. Also the clock keeps fading out and I can correct it by pushing the harness tighter, but it doesn't stay. Any ideas?

I was about to change the master cylinder on my 87 rx7 and had a hard time starting with a little flooding. When it did start I got a lot of white smoke out the exhaust that smelled like oil. Does this sound like blown seals? The exhaust system is a little rocky and I was planning to replace it soon but I have never seen the thing smoke like this (thought she was on fire). I also have completed a tune up with new plugs, wires, timing and filters.

That ticks an old redneck boy like me off!!!! I have to give at least ten minutes to warm u , and it still stalls! I am considering selling it and not having a car at all. I recently developed severe opertional problems almost all all instantly, -poor starting, slow idle speed, low power at low speed, strange noises when trying to speed up engin at the curb. Then all of a sudden it works fine for a few minutes then back to different flavor of bad.. Really strange. Dealer ran the diags and says that everything is fine except the compression differential between the rotors is >1.0 therefore I need a new engin... BS .,but what do I do. Have the Haynes book but reall does't pinpoint my problem Please help and thanks. Things keep changing. The latest is that the engin will run ONLY if the accellerator is in a very small-precise pos tion, Too much or too little and the engin dies. I have to "coax" it toward higher RPMs then relese clutch to take off, then hopefully the power will be enough to get down the stret. Is is crazy? HELP and Thanks again

I am looking to sell my 15" 3 piece aluminum Epsilon Racing Wheels. They are 4x110 bolt pattern, standard 1st gen. pattern. I have two sets of inners, so the wheels can be either 15x8" (too big to fit 1st gen RX7 without fender flares), or front=6.5" an rear=7.0", which perfectly fits a 205/50-15 tire on the stock RX7 body. I will not be able to sell until first part of 1999, but these are truly beautiful wheels at an excellent price. Also, I have a drving light kit which keeps the driving lights tucked up out of view when the headlights are down, but drops the driving lights down when the headlights pop up. Very cool, gets lots of positive comments, but won't fit on my new body packa e. First $30 takes it, includes a set of nice but used driving lights

I bought my '81 w/ 2000 miles on it the week I graduated from Georgia Tech in 1982. Moved to Arizona in '84, and began racing it. Did two years of autocross (1987 ASP champion AZ region, '88 runner-up), then got into road course racing (wheel to wheel). 1989 Arizona Sports Racing Association (ASRA) ITS champ, then though mid-1990's started to drift back in the pack. Finally blew the seals on my Mikuni 12A motor at 127K miles (it died happy, at Firebird International Raceway, yet "Roxie" limped home and passed away peacefully in my driveway). Examined all my options, test drove 911's, Corvettes, NSX's, Mustangs, Stealth's, etc.; nothing had the headroom, killer looks, and neck snapping performance of a 1st gen RX7 with the IMSA kit and a blown 13B, so I went head over heals into this project w th a motto from Proverbs 21:31 - "The horse is prepared for battle, but victory is of the Lord". It specs out at 450 hp, 395 ft-lbs of torque, 0-60=3.9s, 1/4m=10.9 @ 110mph, top end=180 mph. We are just beginning to make a run at the National Auto Sports Association (NASA) Super Unlimited class, and hope to debut in November 98. I have about 2/3rd' of the cost of a new 'Vette invested (or about half of an NSX or Viper), yet it will run circles around them. Awesome web site, please feel free to e-mail with comments/questions about my 1st gen RX7, the greatest performance-to-budget ratio machine ever developed.

Great car I had for peanuts (less than US$ 1600) with 90 000 km. The car has been sitting in a garage for more than 9 years. Running fine. Just had to change the cluch and a rusty door. I got rid of the fan which was locked up and put two electrice fan wi h a thermosta. Seems in good condition and able to run above 200 km/hour (on the odometer). I have clocked it with a GPS at 183 km/h and was not at top speed. BTW I have not got any ticket yet

Replaced engine with one from a 1981 (12A). Can't get it started now. Have checked initial distributor settings from Haynes book and Chilton and believe timing is correct. Can't even get much of a pop out of it when small amount of gas is put down throat f carb and then start attempted. Can get spark to jump about 1/2 in while cranking engine. Cleaned out old gas from tank and put in fresh gas. Manifolds and plumbing was different from 81 so had to use old manifold. I don't have any thing connected after xhaust manifold yet. Any ideas on what to check?

I'm thinking of switching from injection to carburetor with nitrous.i know that i will have to switch to a distributor and coil, but then I can add an ignition box.I have checked on getting an ignition box and was told that it was not compatable with the ars computer.I was wondering if I would get more horsepower by going with the carburetor and ignition box or with bigger injectors and possibly a computer chip?

G'day Paul. That RX-3 on your frony page sure looks like one I used to know. Make sure you gear yourself up for the 4 cyl & RX nats in Canberra, (check FF&R for details) It's going to be big this year & with the move to canberra a lot of Sth & West Oz rotor eads are coming over. The guy that bought my old WAR-300 is even going to show up. Nice drive from Adleaide...... Not. Cheers

I found this page an I think it's great, even for a girl who doesn't know much about cars. I have to finish with I love Rotaries and I always will.

I believe that the rx-7's and their rotary engines are a techological and mechanical wonder. Thier concepts should be throughly studied and apllied. I can't even begin to think of all the questions I need answered RE:my two wanks. 1) Are there any good rx mechanics in Southeast michigan? Apparently there aren't any in central Indiana. 2) Where can I find a reasonably priced trouble shooting guide? My haynes manual is a lot weak in that area. 3) Why, after changing my fuel filter, does my rx need to use a shot of starter fluid every morning when it didn't need to before? I have multiple questions but these are for starters. Thanks, Joel

I really liked your home page. However, I thought the essentric shaft does 3 revolutions to the rotor's 1 revolution, instead of the op[osite of that. Anyway, I also enjoyed reading your instructions about how to reassemble the rotory engine. I've thou ht and read about tackling the rebuilding of one before, but never have.

I didn't know what I was missing until I drove my first RX7. I owned a Mustang 5.0, Taurus SHO, but nothing quite matches the rev happy rotary. My car has 3" downpipe, ITG intake, HKS Turbo exhaust, & magnecor wires. The car does the 40-70 sprint in 4.3-4 7 secs. I would like to know where to go from here for more performance. I was thinking of the Greddy front mount intercooler or the Apex super AFC. If any one has experience with these products or suggestions, please let me know.

Bought a racing carb and took off the stock junk off with all that add on garbage. Put on a racing manifold and welded a cat converter to make it emissions acceptable with repiping the air blower to the new converter. The exhaust is dramatically larger t an stock and gives better performance. I have a junked 12A engine that I will rebuid with peripheral porting. Might need some help in locating people that supply the rotor housings and all the extra things like a larger oil pump, racing clutch, carb for t e ported housing, carbon apex seals... etc. Any suggestions on supplies that are fairly reasonable in pricing? (would also like to drill into the front end housing and have the oil pipe not make as many turns for increased flow at higher RPMs)

I wouldn't waste space in this great page if I did not feel so strong about this: the rotary engine is amazingly compact, space-wise, yet I can find no information on its weight. The smallblock Chevy weighs 500 lbs with aluminum heads, and everything needed to run in the car (flywheel, starter, carb, exhaust manifolds, etc) dry. This engine is capable of 300 HP, and in racing trim twice that, norm asp. If a 12A can produce 150HP tweaked, and 300HP in racing form normally aspirated (ie - no turbo) then I figure it should weigh 1/2 of a smallblock, that means 250 lbs. If it weighs less, even better. It seems that a real rotary lover would have weights committed to memory, especially considering how unique the engine is. If anyone out there reads this you may want to suggest a publication for me to consult if you don't know the weight offhand. And remember, a rotary's weight doesn't say much about real world conditions unless it includes the weight of all the items that make it run (carb, manifolds, flywheel, starter, water pump, etc.) Thanks!

I have a 74 rx-3 that is a ex ITA road race car that I am converting to GT-2 slowly. It currently has a 12A with full rally ported primaries, and bridge ported secondaries. My 88 RX-7 is also being massaged. It is currently getting its GT roll cage painted. It will have a 4-port 13B with a Holly Pro-Jection 4DI injection system. I am also trying to decide if I will put a 3-rotor in it instead. BUT it seems to get a injection system on a 20B is quite expensive.

Paul, Great page. I could see right away that it is technically oriented and not biased to this year's RX7, like it is the only one that matters. This is not my computer, so I can't use E-mail, but I would like to get some info from either you or someone else who surfs in. I need to know how much a 12A weighs, more than just a good guess if possible. I am an engineering student and I am doing a paper on unusual engines, and really want to be accurate. The weight should include all the items that make it function, including starter, flywheel, and intake/exhaust, carb, etc. ("fully dressed"). I assume that it is somewhere in the neighborhood of 300lbs, but what do I know, right? If anyone knows the weight put it somewhere on the page, just as a nice FYI fact, and I'll check back later. Thanks.

Would like to connect with someone who can assist in my 88's idling speed problem. Car was perfect until I had a Fuel Injection Service performed by my Mazda Tech. Since then the idle is off. He can't seem to bring it back to where it was. He has bee working on RX-7s for many years. The spec calls for 700-750 RPM. He claims it should be around 900 RPM. It doesn't matter at this point what the setting it at, the car idles rough intermittently at all settings and he cannot find anything wrong. My 81 has developed a small leak. Are there any bonified oil additives that would help. Thanks

Funky site !!! All you needed to top it off was a females opinion. I would love to get into details about my rotorised Gemini, but a girl likes to keep her secrets. Gotta Buzzz !!!

Just like to say, Rotors are the nicest, most economical, and the cheapest form of total and utter supreme power. i used to like V8's but since i have been in my friends Rx-2, i thought, fark, i gotta get one of these, so i bought my Rx-3, and is the best decision of my whole life ! Great job, keep it up matey !

I love my RX7 and would love to restore it, but is there a way around the high cost of parts. Also, is there a website that can help me troubleshoot some quirks in my engine. Thank you for creating this site. Graham Sterling

I would like some information on what I can do to modify my Rx-7. First I would like to start with a KN filter. Are these hard to put in. I know there are about three hoses that are connected to the air box. Then I would like to upgrade my exhaust and cooling system. Would you recommend some good name brand products and phone numbers. Thank you ! Vila Khamphouy

G'day Paul. Not bad for your first go. The picture of the hydrogen engine is different (refreshing) & the front page layout is fine. That RX-3 looks an awful lot like one ex WAR-300. Although your one seems to have QLD plates were WAR went to S. . Watched the REDLINE ROTARY race crew kick but at the races yesterday. There RX-7 got pinged for noise on the main race, 2 laps from the finish whilst it was miles in front----shit----. Neaxt race with an extra muffler fitted they lost 15 hp but dtill managed to pull of the win. 2nd went to a V8 Commodore. LONG LIVE THE ROTARY eh. Cheers
