My Racing

One of my favorite things to do is race a stock car. I discovered racing in 1992 when I joined a friend's pit crew. He put me in his 1970 Opel GT for a powderpuff race and I was hooked. I started racing my 1982 #24 VW Scirocco in 1993, determined to bring home "Rookie of the Year" honors. I race in the 4-cylinder class at a quarter-mile asphalt oval in Corpus Christi, Texas. I had a typical rookie year, with five wrecks and two wins, a trophy dash and an austrailian pursuit race. I managed to stay on top of the Rookie points all season in spite of some tough competition, finishing the season 8th in points and bringing home "Rookie of the Year" honors.

The 1994 brought on a change in paint schemes and a more competitive season. I won three trophy dashes and three heat races and only had two wrecks, but had more mechanical problems then I had in 1993. This was the year I learned to work on my own car, replacing the transaxle halfway through the season. I finished the season 7th in points, one position better than my rookie year.

Before the 1995 season started we decided to rebuild my motor, and I ended up putting it together. I opened the season with a bang, winning my heat race on the first night of the season. The paint job on the car wasn't even done yet! By the next week I had added hot pink and green stripes to dress it up a little. The P.A.M.S. team was still running two cars and my teammate and I used the same colors to show our team spirit. I won two races that season, one the first night of the season and the second on Mother's Day. In May we had a special night for our class with twin 35-lap features. On lap 5 of the first race I suffered my first wreck of the season which put me out of the race with a flat tire. The second feature I came back to finish third and win a trophy. I was also much more competitive this season, staying in third place in points until the mid-season championship night when a CV joint broke and I hit the front straightaway wall during practice and destroyed my car. The Scirocco was history, and I was bruised and sore but after returning from the hospital after x-rays I collected my second trophy of the season for my third place points standing. Five weeks later I was back in the P.A.M.S. backup car, a Chevette and finished the season in sixth place in points.

I bought a 1982 VW pickup truck just before the 1996 season started and worked on it all season, watching the races from the grandstands every week and hoping to get back before the season ended, but it was not to be. By March of 1997 it was painted and the motor was rebuilt again but not in the truck. I was invited to do a special presentation on ladies in racing which I called "Fast Women" at Del Mar College and bring the truck. After my presentation I was interviewed by a local TV station and was on the news that evening. The next day was the Corpus Christi Autorama car show. I entered my truck in the show. My teammate also entered his Opel GT in the show and we both collected first place trophies for our classes. Work continued on the truck... but the track closed before I could get it there to race. So as of right now I am not racing... but I hope to get back to racing real soon.
