I bought this car several years ago, in
1994, I think. I put about 30,000 miles on it before I gave up on it and
started driving my blue
car again. When my brother and I pulled the engine apart, it was obvious
was had been wrong with the car.
It seemed the previous owner (the guy who bought it new) figured he knew something about cars just because he worked at Advance Auto Parts. Well, he was obviously wrong. I don't know what he did, but he destroyed the poor car. :( The oil passages in the head were all clogged up with carbon-balls from burnt oil, and as a result, one of the lifters became stuck. This wore down one of the lobes on the cam, so much that you wouldn't be able to tell there was supposed to be a lobe there! The piston rings were so worn that the pistons could freely slap about the cylinders, and they had worn deep grooves in the cylinder walls. It was ugly, but fortunately, repairable. A little bit of machine work, and the engine was good as new. I put that engine into my '82 (the blue car), and swapped the '82's engine to this one. The blue car's motor, even having 20,000+ miles on it at the time, was immaculate. A new head gasket, and timing belt, and voila', the car ran beautifully again. But, I now had the Camaro so I had no use for a second Escort. It sat at my parents' house. You could own this little car with the "heart of the beast." I installed a new clutch (due to oil leaking onto the old one, once again, complements of the imbecile who owned it before me) about 30,000 miles ago. It has a new exhaust system (less than 1,000 miles on it). I will also replace the brake pads and shoes, change the oil and if necessary, replace the valve cover gasket.
