This was the impulse buy to end all impulse buys for me. I've always dug Challengers. My first car was a Challenger. I've always wanted a 1970 Challenger as I think that they are the best year. When I saw this one I bought it in spite of some very severe rust. I just couldn't resist a 440 Challenger R/T with a mint interior for $1100. When the guy who owned it took me for a ride he burned rubber for about two city blocks. I was hooked. He even offered to throw in what he said was the numbers matching 383 motor.
The next day reality set in. I began to realize that due to severe rusting the following sheetmetal would need to be replaced:
On the plus side, for some reason the trunk lid, trunk floor, floorboards, and subframes were all solid shiny metal. Apparently this Challenger had been a beach car and did it's rusting from the top on down. Also the motor ran pretty good.
The trans, however was a slipping pig.
After a few sleepless nights I narrowed down my options:
Option #1 - Replace sheetmetal listed above.
Option #2 - Use about 5 galloons of Bondo.
Option #3 - Sell, which I did.
I've still got the 383 in pieces which might end up in my Satellite some day.
