Only rain can whet Schu's appetite now:
with Murray Walker.
F1 Racing June 1998.

We're a third of the way through the season as near as makes no difference, and you really do have to wonder whether
anyone is going to catch Ron's Woking Wonders. We've see one-team domination many times before - Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Lotus, Williams and McLaren have all had bad spells in command.

But the McLaren-Mercedes-Bridgestone combo and everything else that is needed to make a winning package (like a brace of very good drivers) is so complete, so finely honed, so ever-improved, and the others so far behind, that the only thing I was feverishly looking for in Spain to turn the tables was....rain! Remember Monaco last year? In an inferior car, regenmeister Schumacher majestically strode away from the rest to dominate a truly memorable race. On present form, wet roads are what he'll need to finish first in the Principality again, and I can't see anyone else being in the hunt. Good as they are, Benetton aren't close enough; Williams are, baffingly, a long way from being competitive; Jordan are well off the pace, and the rest are even further behind. Outside McLaren, they are a lot of worried men in Formula 1 right now.

Two weeks after Monaco, we're in Canada. The Montreal circuit is very different from Monaco, but unless there's a miracle it'll be the places behind the Silver Arrows that their rivals will be contesting. If you've got the time and the money to make the trip, it's a great place ... and you never know, Schumacher's demands of Goodyear could ring the bell. Or, of course, it could just rain!
