I've seen some riveting races in my time but none more so
than Canada '98. What a stunner! But, thrills and excitement
apart, the important thing is that it brought the world
championship to life. Because, at last, Ferrari have shown that
McLaren are not unbeatable. There may still be sizeable gaps
between Woking and Maranello for the constructors' championship,
and Hakkinen and Schumacher (who is now clear of Coulthard) for
the drivers' title, but they are by no means impossible to
close - especially in a situation where McLaren have proved to be
vulnerable. We are, my friends, in for a feast of the very best
of Formula 1 in the remaining nine races!
Ferrari are now very nearly equal to McLaren with Megastar Michael at the wheel and Benetton are not so far behind - and closing. Williams are on the recovery trail, and if Damon's Montreal race form means anything, there's a very good chance of Jordan getting into the points. Prost, too, with their circuit knowledge should leap forward at Magny Cours. So, France and The Big One at Silverstone after. To be realistic I have to say that McLaren are going to be very hard to beat at both venues. One swallow doesn't make a summer and Ron's team are going to do what they've done successfully, to beaver away and sort out the weak spots.
We've got three weeks of testing and development time before France, and rival teams will be invigorated by the knowledge that the Silver Arrows can be broken. I firmly believe that 1998 is not going to be a replay of McLaren's 1988 whitewash.
