I have been in the decal business for a number of years. I hope that it was not new paint. You should not install any type of decal or stripe for at least three days after the final coat of paint. This allows the gas in the paint to vent out as it cures. If you don't wait, you'll have a bubble problem.
As for the removal, simply warm the decal with a heat gun and pick at the corner with a fingernail. As it starts to come off, peel the decal back flat against the car, as opposed to pull it up and away from the paint. In other words, remove it in the opposite manner that you would apply a stripe. If you pull at a 90 degree angle or so from the sheet metal, you stand a much greater chance of lifting paint.
Use isopropyl alcohol to remove any leftover adhesives. You might test a hidden area of the paint first.
Good luck
