What to Bring, What to Expect

An old B.C. joke:

Don't like the weather? Just wait five minutes.

Needless to say things can change in a big hurry. So I suggest

FOR THE RIDER

- a rainsuit

- proper riding gear, there is a helmet law in B.C.

- sunscreen and a bottle of water stuffed into your tankbag to fight off dehydration and sun stroke

- sunglasses, necessary for spectating at the track

- a camera to capture the scenery of beautiful B.C.

- binoculars (optional) you can see most of the track but the south end is down there a ways....

- cash to buy race tickets. Last year it was 15 bucks

FOR THE BIKE

- we'll be covering some ground so do a double check of your tires, chains and brake-pads etc

- bottle of chain lube, okay all you Coggers with shaft drive can stop laughing

- tools go down fighting

CAMPING TIPS

Remember this is a camping trip so make sure you bring what you need. I for one am a chronic overpacker but I have learned a few tricks that reduce space

- bring a pillow case and stuff a soft shirt or jacket into it: instant pillow

- consider bringing old underwear, socks, etc that you can wear for a couple of days and then throw out. Doesn't make sense to pack dirty laundry around

- if you have a crappy $50 Cdn tire tent like I do, bring a tarp to help keep things dry

- if you're buying a sleeping bag for this tour don't go cheap, get a good, small,one

- stuff all your gear in plastic bags to keep it dry should we hit some rainshowers.

- bring a toque. Don't laugh! Your body loses most of it's heat out of your noggin'. To stay warm in the mornings a toque will do more then a jacket and take up a lot less space to boot. I suggest one big enough to go on over top of your helmet.....:)

- if you use an airmatress bring a repair kit. Nothing like hearing psssssstttttt at 3 in the morning. I love sleeping on the ground. Just ask my wife about our honeymoon in Tofino.
