Supras

This introduction was last updated on 1 JUL 1997

Welcome to the Supra Owners Group, International (SOGI). SOGI
is comprised of two fundamental components: the mailing list and the
web site. In certain areas, members have formed regional
organizat
ions on an ad hoc basis.

The mailing list is an informal, normally unmoderated forum for the
discussion of Toyota Supras and Celica Supras.

Any Supra-related topic is open for discussion, but you might be able
to find useful information about Supras fro
m other sources. General
maintenance questions, while allowed, might get more responses on
rec.autos, and questions about turbo modifications might find answers
on Toyota Modifications.

Questions with easy answers may generate a lot of responses. The
h
ard, interesting, question may generate few, if any, responses.
Don't be discouraged. Sometimes, nobody really does know the answer
to your question. Once you find the answer, you'll be the expert to
whom others will turn for help.

There are some rules
 imposed on the discussion. Commercial
advertising is generally not allowed. Certain suppliers provide
discounts to members, and they may be listed on a suppliers page.
Announcements of such discounts may be posted. Questions about other
vehicles, even
other Toyotas, including Celicas and Cressidas, should
not be be addressed to the SOGI mailing list.

Under no circustances should you post a message to the mailing list
about computer viruses. Most such messages are themselves the virus:
they affect th
e readers by wasting time.

If you are even tempted to mark your postings as "Non-Supras" or "Off
Topic", please think hard about whether it is appropriate to post. It
probably isn't.

Most seriously, insults directed at other members are prohibited.
Alt
hough usually unmoderated, members violating these rules may find
themselves temporarily having their postings moderated. Often,
sarcasm does not work well over e-mail, and may be interpreted as a
straight insult. Smileys :-) can help improve understand
ing of such
constructions. Only the list administrator may be criticized or
insulted with no penalty.

If you truly feel the need to respond aggressively to a certain
posting, please send mail directly to the original poster. Do not
include the list in
your reply.

end

Messages which contain administrative words, such as subscribe and
unsubscribe, among others, will be sent for moderation. If you really
need to post a message with such a word, put the word 'end' on a line
by itself, before the offendi
ng words. Creative misspelling can also
be effective.

Messages from users whose From field does not match their subscribed
address will be moderated. Most likely, the administrator will add
the new From field to an alias file so that later posts from t
he
unsubscribed account will not be delayed.

Moderated messages can be delayed for a week or more.

The list administrator since July, 1997, is Frank Wanicka.

Before Frank, Daniel I. Applebaum, maintained the list from April,
1992 through June, 1997.
The list was founded in March, 1992 by Don
Eilenberger.

To post to this list, you must join the mailing list. If you need one
question answered, and do not wish to join the distribution list, you
may send a message to "Visitor Relations" who will forwar
d it to the
group for you. If you are not currently in the group, make it clear in
your mailing; folks will have to reply to you directly.

To be added or deleted from the mailing list, send a request to
the "administrative" alias: [email protected]
om
This is an automated system, using Post.Office. Send a single line mail
message with the word 'help' to inquire about Post.Office commands.

You can subscribe to the realtime distribution mode, where each posted
message gets sent to you directly and i
ndividually, or you can choose
the digest mode, where a group of messages get combined into a single
message. In the below examples, substitute your full email address
where the example reads YourEmailAddress.

To subscribe to the realtime mode, send the
 line:
subscribe supras YourEmailAddress
to [email protected]

To subscribe to the digest mode, send the line:
subscribe supras YourEmailAddress digest
to [email protected]

To unsubscribe from the realtime or digest mode, send the line:

MR2

Greetings! Welcome to the Toyota MR2 electronic mailing lists.
These lists are about Toyota MR2 sports cars, both the older "Mark I" style
sold from 1985 to 1989, and the newer "Mark II" style sold (in North America)
from 1991 to 1995.

If you subscri
bed just to get answers to a few questions, please start by
scanning the FAQ at http://www.mr2.com/FAQ.html where you'll find answers to
many common questions.

Anything *reasonably* related to Toyota MR2's may be posted there.
This mailing list is currently unmoderated; please help keep it that way.

What's
 the difference between mr2-interest, mr2-digest, and mr2-announce?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
TO POST TO THE LIST AND DIGEST: [email protected]
mr2-interest sends postings out immediately.
mr2-digest bunc
hes up a number of postings and then sends them all at once.
mr2-interest and mr2-digest get everything posted to mr2-interest, mr 2-digest,
and mr2-announce, so don't subscribe to more than one.

TO POST TO THE ANNOUNCE LIST: [email protected]
mr2-
announce is for URGENT matters. Announcements go out immediately to
everybody on mr2-announce, mr2-interest AND mr2-digest.

Anybody may make an announcement -
but only announcements of interest to all members world-wide, and requests for
"emergency"
advice are appropriate here. Examples of emergencies: You need
expert advice to make a repair or purchase decision on short notice.
Discussions are not appropriate. If you have advice for an emergency
situation, send it to the requester directly by
email. If you want to carbon
dopy your response, copy it to the interest or digest. Do NOT copy to the
ANNOUNCE list. The prohibition against discussions is not enforced
automatically now; please help keep it that way.

TO GET ON THE ANNOUNCE LIST
: [email protected] "subscribe"
Subscribe to the announce list if you ONLY want to receive postings to the
announce list, and do not want to receive the digest or regular list.

If you have a question that isn't answered by the FAQ, and you as
k on the
lists, and you get useful responses, please summarize them in a summary message
to the list where you asked the
question so others may benefit. "Summarize" means explain what you learned,
not simply concatenate all the messages you received
with headers, signatures,
and duplicate info intact.

For the benefit of the people who maintain this list
----------------------------------------------------
Please try to keep messages under 5000 characters, try not to send from an
e-mail account th
at is not subscribed, and try not to use the words 'help' or
'subscribe' in the subject or first few lines of the body. Any of these things
will cause your message to go to the list maintainers for approval and will
delay its appearance.

Please unsu
bscribe from all your mailing lists before closing an account with

an ISP - so we don't have to do it for you.

On an average day in April 1997, about 100,000 bytes were transmitted as 50 or
more individual messages and as 3 or more digests. Before yo
u subscribe from
work, be sure your employer tolerates that level of non-business related
individual email.

A mailing list is not a club, although announcements from various regional MR2
clubs appear here from time to time.

Subject headings (MK I or
 MK II?)
---------------------------------
The volume of messages makes it incumbent on all of us to make our Subject:
lines as explicit as
possible. In particular, if it falls into any of the following categories,
please start your Subject: header li
ne with

"MKI NA": posting only applicable to 1985-89 normally aspirated "Mark I"
angular MR2's
"MKI SC": posting only applicable to 1985-89 supercharged "Mark I" angular
MR2's
"MKII NA": posting only applicable to 1991-95 normally aspirated "Mark
 II"
rounded MR2's
"MKII TURBO": posting only applicable to 1991-95 MR2's with factory turbos

Please follow the category with your subject like "brake/supsension questions"
or "replacement turbo needed". The time we save in doing this way is our own
.
If your posting doesn't fall into
any of these categories, don't worry about using a special header.

Other resources
---------------
There is a web page maintained by [email protected]:
        http://mr2.com
There you'll find a "FAQ" of answers to
 frequently-asked-questions and a wealth
of other information. As with other mailing lists and newsgroups, it's good to
start by reading the FAQ.

Archives are available at http://www.oak.san-jose.ca.us/mr2-interest, and also
at http://mr2.com via web
 and also via ftp: see

About electronic mailing lists
------------------------------
Your name will usually be removed from the list if a posting bounces due to
"user unknown",
"configuration error", "filesys
tem full", or the like. No email is sent in
these cases, so if the list gets very quiet, you probably have been removed.
If you post a message and get numerous bounce replies, do not be concerned or

forward them to anybody. They are proof that your
 message got through to the
majority of the list - that's why you got bounces from the minority.

Before posting to these or any other mailing lists or newsgroups, please read
the advice posted monthly to news.announce.newusers. The most important
con
vention for preserving the quality of electronic communication is just:
"praise in public, criticize in private." If you think somebody is dead wrong,
send email to that person. Don't start a flame war in view of the whole list.
If somebody else fai
ls to observe that convention, remember "better to be
silent and be thought a fool than hit ^D and remove all doubt".

Do not use this or any public mailing list to plan any illegal activity,
whether traffic violations or copyright violations or anythi
ng else. To do so
exposes the list maintainers to potential legal problems they don't need and
can't afford.
