  Check Cash Card Expiry Date

Page created 04 November 2002

Return to D'Singapore Scene

The introduction of the Electronic Road Pricing scheme in 1988 made the collection of tolls for entering the Central Business District cashless and significantly less manpower intensive. Great for government coffers, bad for motorists' wallets...

Other than for paying this toll, the card has so far been about as useful as a toilet paper. To make it worse, now we discover that the damned card has a limited lifespan.

So before it turns into a pumpkin, and becomes absolutely useless, find out if your cash card will be expiring soon.

Malaysian motorcyclists should also note that their "AutoPass" cards are actually CashCards, customised for the Land Transport Authority, and are also subject to the same expiry condition.

Small suggestion: after you find out the expiry date, write it in waterproof ink (e.g. permanent marker) on the back of your card and cover it with some clear adhesive tape (to keep it from being worn out or staining your clothes, etc).

NETS makes life easier for CashCard users with new ways to find out their card's expiry date

Singapore, October 28, 2002 -- Network For Electronic Transfers Singapore Pte Ltd (NETS) announced today that it has taken steps to make life easier for CashCard users who want to check the expiry date of their cards. NETS has launched a simple Web application at www.nets.com.sg that displays the expiry date of a CashCard, enabling users to check their card’s expiry date online. Starting in 2003, NETS will also print the date of issue on all CashCards.

To use the Web application to find out the expiry date of a CashCard, a user simply enters the unique, 16-digit identification number printed on the back of all CashCards and clicks the "submit" button. The card’s expiry month and year will be displayed. No card reader or further information is required for the task.

Also, beginning in 2003, all new CashCards will have the date of issue printed on them. CashCard users will know at a glance whether they should retire their old cards, which have a normal validity period of five years from the date of issue. Card users should always double check the card’s expiry online, however, as NETS may extend the validity period of any series of CashCards.

Remarking on the significance of the two moves, Mr Chng Chee Yeong, NETS’ Group Head for Operations said, "It is important to us that CashCard users trust NETS to look after their interests. This trust comes from the reliability and security of our systems, from customer service, and from making our products convenient and user-friendly. The Web application at www.nets.com.sg and printing of issue date make life easier for CashCard users, and demonstrate our commitment to resolving customer concerns."

The normal, five-year validity period of CashCards ensures that cards are retired before physical wear and tear makes them susceptible to problems, and that cards in circulation have current software and security features. NETS can extend the validity period of cards where appropriate. When an expiring card is inserted into any NETS point-of-sale device, a "Due to Expire" message is displayed, although transactions can still be completed. CashCard users who receive that message should check their card’s expiry date online and obtain a refund.

Once a card expires, it cannot be topped up or used for transactions, but a full refund on any remaining monetary value and the deposit can be obtained for up to two years at:

  • Any Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of DBS/POSBank, OCBC and UOB for an immediate refund.
  • Any bank branch of DBS/POSBank, OCBC and UOB.
  • NETS office at 298 Tiong Bahru Road, #04-01/06 Central Plaza (beside Tiong Bahru Plaza) during office hours:
    • Monday through Friday, 9:00AM -- 5:00PM
    • Saturday 9:00AM -- 12:00PM (noon)

Please note that refunds for some organisation specific CashCards cannot be obtained at ATMs. Please refer to the respective organizations on the necessary arrangement.

CashCard users with questions about the new CashCard expiry web application or how to get refunds can visit the NETS website at www.nets.com.sg or contact the NETS Customer Service Call Centre at 6274 1322. CashCard users without Web access can also call the Customer Service Call Centre and tell the customer service staff the 16-digit identification number on the card to check their card’s expiry date.
