More women get motorbike licences

By Hasnita A Majid

About 30% more women got motorbike licences last year compared to five years ago.

In 1997, 382 women were licensed to ride motorbikes.

Last year, this number jumped to 512.

But it seems female bikers are more careful.

Only one died in a traffic accident in year 2002 compared to 89 men.

According to the Traffic Police, most female bikers opt for a Class 2B licence, which means they can ride bikes of less than 200cc.

29-year-old Noor Hasnah Adam, for example, has been riding motorbikes for 12 years.

But it hasn't been all smooth riding.

Nine years ago, she was thrown off her bike and dragged by another bike along Thomson Road.

That left her scarred for life but it hasn't deterred the teacher and mother of three.

She said: "They (motorbikers) should wear a jacket, gloves and a good helmet. If that individual wants to ride a bike because of the glamour, of course it's dangerous. But it's alright if it's for transportation or hobby."

Her elder sister, Intan, may look less rugged but she has also been riding motorbikes for about 9 years.

The secretary says riding a motorbike gives her a sense of independence.
