Avoid riding in convoys Last updated 16 Aug 2003 Back to D'Singapore Scene
The Straits Times Interactive Jan 6, 2000 Indifference blamed for holiday road accidents PETALING JAYA -- The number of accidents on Malaysian roads will continue to rise during the festive season unless drivers and road-users change their thinking and attitude about driving. Several groups said that until this happens, no amount of publicity, campaigns or warnings could bring remorse to irresponsible drivers. National Institute of Occupational and Health chairman Lee Lam Thye said accidents could be prevented if people thought more about their safety. "However, despite the repeated warnings, motorists tend to speed when balik kampung." he said. 'Balik kampung' is 'returning home' in Malay. He added: "They seem to be in a hurry when they should be more relaxed during holidays and take their time when driving back." He said the police would go out of their way to ensure road safety during the festive season but accidents still happened. A Safety Driving Centre assistant operation manager said new drivers should avoid driving along unfamiliar roads and outstation during holidays. "Driving in the city is different from the country-side," he said, adding that new drivers might not be able to anticipate what was in front of them, especially if there were no signs. Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) committee chairman Mudzaffar Mustapha advised those driving long distance to break their journey. "For example, if you are driving from Johor to Penang, it is wise to take a break every few hours and not rush," he said. "I think it is better that they leave early so that they do not put themselves through unnecessary strain." He also advised motorists to make sure that their cars were in good condition before beginning the journey. -- The Star/Asia News Network
