EXCEL

The Excel has the distinction of being the last car that Colin Chapman was involved with.

Launched in late 1982 as a development of the Eclat. The 2+2 Excel used much more reliable Toyota gearbox, brakes and drive shafts.
Changes were made to the body, while the price was reduced to help sales.

The original Excel was replaced in late 1985 by the SE, which used a high compression 2174cc engine, producing 180 bhp.
Further changes included new front and rear spoliers and a new interior and dashboard.

To further increase the Excel market share, a 4-speed automatic model was launched in 1987, designated the Excel SA.

Production continued through to the end of the 1980's, with the Excel gaining more aerodynamic mirrors along with the Esprit in 1989.

Aster hitting a peak in 1985, production slowed down until 1992 when the Excel ceased production.

Although performance wasn't up to Turbo Esprit standards, the Excel could still get to 60mph in under 7 seconds and top 135mph, the car was never turbocharged due to space restrictions, but handled like only a Lotus can.
