1984 saw Team Lotus with a new chassis that would be ready for the first race of the season.
The Type 95T featured a new Renault Turbo engine, the EF4B.
Qualifying for the first race of the season couldnt have gone much better, with De Angelis placing the JPS Lotus in pole position on the Rio grid.
Mansell had a slower start to the season, scoring his first points in Round 5 with 3rd place in the French Grand Prix, only days after his mother had died.
The following race in Monaco saw Mansell lead a Grand Prix for the first time. For 5 laps, Nigel was in control in torrential rain, until he made a 5cm error of judgement on a slippery white line and crashed into retirement.
The next points for Nigel came in the German Grand Prix with 4th place. He also scored a 3rd place in the Dutch Grand Prix, with De Angelis returning to the points in 4th.
Team Lotus didnt win a race in 1984, but scored points in 12 of the 16 rounds. This gave them a strong 3rd place in the Constructors Championship, with De Angelis 3rd in the Drivers Championship and Mansell equal 9th (the best both had ever achieved).
De Angelis stayed for their fourth full season together, though 1984 signalled the end of Mansells contract.
A conservative race in the Brazilian heat gave Elio a 3rd place and 4 points, double his 1983 score already.
This proved to be the first of ten consecutive finishes for De Angelis, all but one in the points.
5th in Belgium, 3rd in San Marino, 5th in France, 5th in Monaco, 4th in Canada, 2nd in Detroit, 3rd in Dallas and 4th in Britain, quite an achievement.
The following race in Canada gave his second points finish of the season with 6th place.
Two races later in Dallas, a Lotus was on pole again, but this time is was Mansell, with De Angelis in 2nd.
For 35 laps, Lotus dominated, until deteriorating grip and then gearbox problems dropped Mansell to 6th (only after he had to push the Lotus over the line.)
De Angelis ended the season with 5th place in the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril.
