| Here are some quotes from various '98 Intrigue owners: "I bought my Intrigue in March 1998 and have 16K miles on it. I have not had any problems with the car...I have received excellent service from my selling dealer." "I purchased a new 98 Intrigue last year and so far, I'm very disappointed with the car...The transmission seems to get confused and does not know what gear to be in...The car does not have a 'tight' feel- it feels more like a car with 130,000 miles." "I too have a '98 Intrigue that has had its share of strange problems...The first and worst was a strange bumping noise that you could feel through the steering wheel while turning to the left. After fruitless repeated trips to and test drives with the dealer, I got on the Internet. It turns out that Popular Mechanics' long term test car was having a similar problem to mine. They diagnosed it as intermediate steering gear...I printed off everything I could find on the steering gear, took it to the dealership, and they finally decided to check it out. Sure enough, the noise and bump went away after they replaced the intermediate steering gear." "It's a fun car to drive, but I am annoyed by the build quality. The most serious problem has been the transmission slippage which occurred when you accelerated from a dead stop...Beach Motors finally replaced the transmission after less than 15,000 miles." "I bought a '98 Intrigue in February of '98. It has nearly 20,000 miles on it and has been a constant source of trouble...The windshield washer pump died. The problem was traced to a connection that just fell off...About a third of the time, the transmission shudders as it shifts from first to second gear under heavy throttle. Two dealers have tested it and said that the problem is an acceptable deviation from the norm, even though one of the service managers was riding in the car when it shifted so harshly that the entire dashboard bounced up and down...The steering rack feels and sounds loose. After 9,000 miles the dealer could no longer deny that the car was seriously in need of help so they replaced the rack. Now after 10,000 miles, the problem has returned." "I was hesitant to buy another Oldsmobile after my 1990 Calais Quad 442, or another American car for that matter, but the Intrigue drove really nice, and had some great features. I figured a $26,000 car would wear better than my $15,000 Calais did. Well, 17,000 miles later, I am wishing that I had kept the Calais. With 80,000 miles, it had less problems than my new Intrigue, not to mention a $0.00 monthly car payment." "It's oddly refreshing to see that I'm not the only one having problems with the Intrigue. It has been difficult to explain Intrigue phenomena to the "not my fault" dealership service managers...I think this car will see a new owner after the warranty period expires." "The great deal I got on this car is costing me a fortune!" "I had very good fuel efficiency on highway and city rides...This 'classic' engine, which they replaced in the 1999 version, is a breeze to me; responsive, aggressive when needed, very stable...I'm very hard to satisfy about highway ride, and am very satisfied with the behavior of the car." "There are two Intrigues in the family: my son has one in El Paso, Texas. My brother-in-law has one in Marion, Ohio. On one of them, the driver's door sticks; on the other, the passenger door sticks! I mean it really sticks, requiring a strong push/pull to open." "My Intrigue likes to die as I slow for an intersection stop, or accelerate out of such a stop. It's been back to the dealer at least six times for this problem." "I don't own an Intrigue, but have been monitoring this vehicle for purchase. Correct me if I am wrong, but did GM have a major labor dispute around the time that it was being introduced? I've always avoided vehicles that were manufactured during a year of worker unrest." "My Intrigue has spent 11 days in one dealer or another for a defective radiator cap, replace defective seatbelts, properly align front doors, replace door weather stripping, turn the rotors and replace the pads at 15K, replace the warped rotors at 30K, replace defective brake switch, and replace a defective steering shaft. It has been at the dealer for the past four days for an internal transmission error code." "I have been very happy with my Intrigue and it has never returned to the dealer. I recommend the car to anyone." |

| More comments from '99 owners: "I have a '99 GL with the 3.5...So far so good. The only concern so far is the rear brakes rumble occasionally. I plan to have the dealer check the brakes when I take it in for the first oil change." "At 1100 miles, the steering gear and gear shaft replaced because of a noise heard when rocking the steering wheel back and forth. After the repair was done, the noise was still present...Power steering has a lot of moans and groans." "I purchased the car in March of 1999 with the new 3.5L engine. Soon thereafter I embarked on a trip from Warner Robins, GA to Niagara Falls, NY and return. The car ran flawlessly...The brakes worked in excellent fashion and the engine did not skip a beat nor burn a drop of oil." "I have had no problems. The car is fun to drive, although the handling is not quite as good as reviews led me to expect...The quality of the build is excellent." |
