I thought I'd start with the good things. So here's the picture. It is a looker. This is pretty much where it ends.
If I had to describe the new Astra (and the old one for that matter) in one word, it would be mediocre. Its 1.4 16 valves engine produces 89 horses, which is about average. It speeds the car 0-60 in 12 seconds - about what you would expect from a 1.4 litre sort of car (a bit less ,actually). The Disc/Drum brakes are nothing out of the ordinary and it has the standard 11 gallon fuel capacity. Official maximum speed is at 110mph but I doubt even the late Ayrton Sena could take it there, as it starts to chuckle and "dance" around 80. It consumes an average 36 miles per gallon(13.5 km/litre) and is pretty much as long,wide and tall as you would expect a car of its category to be. Handling is less than satisfactory and I wouldn't seat a baby in it ,for the lack of decent shock absorption. I suppose the designer thoguht it pointless to work on the comfort of a car that shouldn't go very fast anyway.
I guess the concept behind the Astra is an average car for the average person. But with so many good cars in the market - not bad just doesn't cut it anymore. Thumbs down for the Astra.
