For everyone out there who is looking to do something tonight, tomorrow
night or this weekend, I have a game plan for you.
Do the clutch resistor plate removal. The effect is awesome. Really
cant
believe what removing those little plate does.
Tools/ Supply needed:
Brake fluid (get enough, we are going to drain the whole clutch system)
14 mm box end wrench
10 mm box end wrench
Tiny-ity-mini flat screwdriver (the ones that come in a jewel case)
Drain pan
Estimate on time: half an hour if you are fast, an hour top if you are
a
novice.
Step 1
Jack up the front of the car, easiest if you have a hydraulic
jack...just jack it up at the front center jack location.
Step 2
Use the 10 mm box end wrench, open the bleeder valve. Drain all the
fluid in the system into a pan.
Step 3
Use the 14 mm box end wrench to take out the banjo bolt on the slave
cylinder
Step 4
After banjo bolt is off, you'll see a circular metal plate with 4 feet
and a tiny itty mini holes in the middle. Use the mini screwdriver
to
pick it out. There is a spring behind the plate, you can try to push
on
the plate so the spring will eject everything out. Don't let these
items
to hit you in the eyes..:-) Remove the plate and spring from the slave
cylinder, keep them for your amusement.
Step 5
Assembly the banjo bolt back on, don't forget to put back the 2 copper
gasket on that banjo bolt assembly (I re-use them they are fine and
aren't leaking on mine) Tighten it up. Fill the clutch reservoir with
fresh brake fluid and bleed the whole system. Lower the car and you're
done!
Result:
Amazingly good. Clutch pedal is lighter to push, (because we are not
pushing brake fluid against a plate with small holes in the middle
anymore, what were those guys at the factory thinking? ) The difference
is night and day. The pedal springs back into position faster than
I can
lift my foot of it. And it doesn't have a tendency to get stuck in
there
anymore. Improved engagement feel, you can FEEL when the clutch is
biting and when it is releasing...AWESOME!
I did this last night and also flush and bleed the whole 4 brake on
the
wife's car, as part of my yearly maintenance list on the cars. Tell
you
what, its like switching to a bigger brake, the stopping distance,
etc....you can definitely what a difference it make by replacing a
year
old brake fluid. (I use of the shelf Castrol GT LMA) But the clutch
pedal feel, oy! I cant even stop praising that one.
Mike@RRE mentioned that the 1G also has this same resistor plate, I
am
going to have to pull mine out of the GVR4's slave cylinder next.
