'Militarised' VW 181s

181/182 owners aquire their vehicles for a variety of reasons. Many in the past wanted an ex-military vehicle but could not source one. Others have attenpted to reconfigure their 181s to resemble Type 82s. Whatever their goal, below are a few photos of such conversions. Whatever the purists say, these vehicles get a lot of use - which is what its about isnt it ?

Tony Lewis' VW 181 has undergone many changes in its lifetime. Starting out as stock ex-Bundeswehr vehicle, it went through many changes to fit Tony`s requirements for Battle re-enactments and then off-roading. The following few photographs give a small indication of his efforts :

Original modification in 'coco the clown' livery :

Seeing Double ? Final configuration (left) next to Keith Foster`s conversion, only difference the tyre size and raising of rear suspension :

Tony`s 181 with windscreen down - looks and does the buisness :

Tony and Keith also get up to a bit of re-enacting. Here are a couple of shots from last years exploits : :

Time for a break - even seasoned campaigners need a bite to eat.... :

Nice period group shot, Tony`s 181 in the foreground :

David Edge`s tastefully converted Type 82 lookalike :

Even has a deactivated MG 34 ! :

This conversion has been around for several years now. Unsure as to who is the present owner - although the racing tyres are a little unusual . . . :

A more typical military scheme spotted at Beltring `97 :
