Rains Cuts Short Dwarfs Trip to Shady Bowl
by Shawn Sell
The fifth Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association event of 2000 at Shady Bowl Speedway near DeGraff, Ohio was cut short when rains came after only one of the tracks regular features could be completed. Shady Bowl promoter Charlie Stapleton has agreed to allow the 17-car field to make up the rained out feature this Saturday August 12 to make for double feature action that night. However, only the 17 drivers that lined up on the fifth will be eligible to compete in the first feature.
The night will also host the first ever Lucky 7 Sports Shootout. Lucky 7 Sports of West Liberty has agreed to donate trophies for the top three finishers of the evening's second feature. Also, for the first time in 2000, the dwarf cars will get the opportunity to qualify to set the starting line-up, replacing the regular pill draw format.
After two exciting heat races, the invert will place the two drivers atop the OVDCA point standings, Mike Sell of Urbana and Bill Hostetler of West Liberty on the front row. Row number two will line-up Marysville's Mark Bernard and Tennessee's Josh Adams while the third row houses Mark Jamison and Keith Bailey. Three drivers will take the People's Savings and Loan Challenge hoping to add an extra $100 to their payout if they can win. Those drivers are Chad Pendleton, who won the dwarfs last feature on July 22, 1999 OVDCA champion Jason Eddy and Tennessee's Doug Carrigan.
Heat number one from the night of the fifth was paced at the beginning by Carrigan. The Tennessee driver was out to a big lead before breaking an oil line and spinning out on lap two. That handed the lead over to Bailey who was quickly passed on the restart by Sell. Sell's lead was short lived, though as Bernard made the pass by the conclusion of the second lap. From there, Bernard held the lead until the last lap when Eddy made his move to take the win with Sell holding on for third. A post-race trip across the scales however, found Eddy 20 pounds light, disqualifying him and handing the win to Bernard. Heat number two was all Pendleton as he charged from inside the third row to dominate the race. Tennessee's Adams was second with Hostetler taking the last invert position.
