James Crowder's

F-150
Lightning

Pulling up to a red light along side of this stock looking Lightning might tempt some unsuspecting Z28 that he may have a tune-up run for a future Cobra. Looks can be deceiving!

With the only apparent modification being the sharp looking rear roll pan, you soon find that once the light turns green, that roll pan is all you'll see. If you could have seen what was under the hood, you would have realized that this is not your everyday 454SS beater, but a much improved version. Before the Vortech S-Trim Supercharger was installed, some of the engine modifications were the Ford Motorsport B351 cam, Cobra 1.7 roller rockers, a phenolic spacer, ported lower intake & heads, AutoLogic chip, & Bassani exhaust. This combination helped James to run a 13.86 @ 97.36 with the naturally aspirated engine. Very impressive!

Lifting the hood, attention is focused on the Vortech S-Trim Supercharger. The S-Trim, a new JMS chip, 30# injectors, & some timing changes at the Ford Fun Weekend in Montgomery, AL, helped to bring James a best of 12.29 @ 110.6 & his first win with the Lightning.

James' most recent best is 12.2 @ 11.5, but he feels that with a little fine tuning, dipping into the 11's is in the near future.

*Update: 12/12/98 James just informed me that he ran an 11.93 @ 114.5 mph with no tuning changes, just cooler weather and a set of larger slicks. He went from 28 by 9 to 28 by 10.5. He has a 2800 stall convertor just waiting to go in. He plans to net mid 11's. The Lightning has been put on hold while he is restoring a '67 Mustang Coupe. He wants the Stang for a daily driver so he can park the Lightning.
