 Island Map

I and Berrin visited Samothraki island of Greece between 14 – 16 / 07 /2000 .
We have heard many things about the island but unfortunately had no chance to visit the island up to know which the ferryboat  that takes you to the island departs only 40 kms away from Turkish –Greek border .
We departed from Berrin’s parent's summer house at Silivri town of Istanbul about 03:30 o'clock on the Saturday morning, after 2.5 hours cool riding arrived the border. It is so usual and easy to complete the formalities at the both borders  which we have passed many times for our trips to Greece.
The first ferry from Alexandropoli city to Samothraki island was 08:00 o'clock in the morning and we easily caught this ferry. It takes almost 2.5 hour sailing  to arrive the island. The weather was beautiful the sea was so quite, the panorama bas magnificent while were approaching the island. According to our first impressions from the boat, it was quite island, the nature was so virgin and there was a very high mountain with white clouds on its peak. As soon as arrived the island, we arranged our return tickets for Sunday night ferryboat.
A very kind Greek guy who speaks Turkish helped us and gave us some information about the island further the data which we already had from a homepage in internet before our visit. According to the advises, we stayed north coast of the island which is more green, and accommodation facilities are more often comparing with south part of the island. After arranging our hotel  at Ano Kariotis , we went a beach at the south  east coast of the island (Kipos Beach) and spent our all day over there under the sun and swam lot at the crystal waters of the North Aegean Sea.
There are only two villages at the island, one of them is Hora (Samothraki) where located at the top of the hill and second one is Kamariotissa which is also port of the island where our ferryboat berthed. We had our dinner a very nice restaurant  named Scorpions, at Kamaroitsa,  run by a nice lady named Teresa who was an expatriate in USA more than 20 years and come back to her home town after many years. Next morning, we made a trip around the island, first we went Hora village, to have our breakfast, which is a typical Greek village than visited the south coast of the island (Rahia Ammos)  which is more quite comparing with north. Later on, we visited a waterfall inner parts of island. We parked our bike and walked almost 25-30 minutes to reach the waterfall. We swam at the cold waters of the waterfall and come back to hotel. On the way Berrin visited historical places of the island while I was cleaning  our bike !
We took our ferry at 19:00 o'clock , arrived to Alexandropoli about 21:30 and departed from there 22:00 o'clock. The Greek border were full of cars and the border was closed for couple hours since the Turkish border were blocked due to congestion caused from Turkish expatriates who work in Europe and come back to Turkey for their summer holidays. As a usual result  of  being motorcyclists, we faced the kind and usual  assistance of the custom officers  against cars and  passed the both border easily and arrived the Istanbul about 02:00 o'clock in the morning.
We decided that this is the island which we always dreamed and will visit again and again…
