X-Body Specifications

Here are a number of specifications on the X body cars. The Engine specifications have been reserved for the engine page, so they are not posted here. However you will find many others on this page. If there are others you'd like to se on here please e-mail me.

Important VIN numbers:

For the X cars, the important VIN numbers are the 8th (engine), 10th (model year), and 11th (plant code).
Engine codes:
2.5 L 4 cyl carbureted (80-81 on U.S. models, 80-83 Canadian) - 5
2.5 L 4 cyl TBI (82-85) - R
2.8 L V6 carbureted, 1980 - 7
2.8 L V6 carbureted, 1981-85 - X
2.8 L V6 HO - Z (82-84 Skylarks, Phoenixes, Omegas; 81-84 Citation X-11)
2.8 L V6 MPFI - W (1985)

Year codes:
1980-85 - A through F

Plant codes:
W - Willow Run, Michigan
6 - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
T - Tarrytown, NY (they build Chevy trucks there now)

The other numbers mean: (i.e. 17 digit VIN; 1981 on)
1st-Country of Origin (1=USA)
2nd-Manufacturer (G=GM)
3rd-Division (1=Chevy, 2=Pontiac, 3=Oldsmobile, 4=Buick)
4th-?
5th-trim line (e.g. B=Skylark, C=Skylark Limited, D=Skylark Sport)
6th & 7th-Body Style (37: 2 door coupe; 69: 4 door sedan; I have to check for the hatchback 4 door and 2 door, and for the Slant back)
8th-Engine (see above)
9th-?
10th-Year of production (see above)
11th-Plant code (see above)
12th-17th-Sequential Production Number
