MK3 GOLF VR6 SUPERCHARGED
Story by Noor Abrahams Pictures by Brad Beardow |
Brad Beardow, co-owner of 1552DESIGN (the VW go-faster specialists) is someone who doesn't do something half-done. He does it right all the way! Prior to this Golf VR6, Brad has since owned a host of cars including the original supercharged Golf VR6 which was stolen almost a year ago. From the pictures on this page you cannot help but try to understand if the car pictured is a Mk3 or a Mk4? Well, Brad has started a much-debated topic on VWVortex regarding when does a car lose it's identity when modded to a point where you can no longer identify it. That sounds almost as if the car in question is a person with a unique identity of it's own. Well, if that sounds too much for you to process, then lets focus on the car being featured. For starters it is based on a Mk3 Golf VR6. However, the sheet metal has been changed considerably | by transforming the car from a Mk3 to something in-between like a Mk3.5! The only tell-tale signs that this is a Mk3 are the rear tail lights. To get the effect of a Mk4, the parts bin was raided and almost an entire Golf Mk4 Cabriolet body was used. Hardly any modification was required except for the rear fenders which required some cutting to fit the rear bumper. The front bonnet, side fenders, headlights and grille all are Mk4 Cabrio parts. The rear bumper was also swapped and replaced for the Mk4 Cabrio unit as well as upper part of the Cabrio tailgate joined with the stock Mk3 unit. All the bodywork was done by Jason who does almost all of Brads' custom bodywork. Konigseder Mk4 fender flares were reshaped to fit the side fenders of the Mk3. The rear tail-lights were simply tinted red to complete the look which Brad was set on | achieving with this car. The mirrors also gave way to sporty DTM units for a completed transformation. Wheels chosen were Porsche Cup 1 units in 17x7.5 specification but since fitting the fender flares, wider 9,5Js were fitted! The engine received a Z-Engineering supercharger as well as Quaife 6-speed gearbox. Just as fast as the Golf can go it also needs to stop and Porsche brakes were chosen replacing the stock units. The interior received a touch of class with the addition of RECARO SRD bucket seats and a suede-blue Sparco steering wheel. Brad went a step further by replacing the DTM mirrors with projektzwo units. This Mk3 is all that a Mk3 could and can ever be. Or is it a Mk4? You decide. The car has since been sold a few months to Brad's friend Arty Bethnell, lucky sod... |
